New from Lafayette, La
My previous bike was a 2009 Suzuki Boulevard C50T. Loved this bike, just felt that its "legs" were a little short, so I decided to step up. I found a 2005 Nomad 1600 with only 12,500 miles for a great deal that I couldn't pass up :-)
As I do all of my own servicing, I am looking forward to learning more about the particulars of this bike and options for possible upgrades ;-) The only thing on my agenda right now is a restoration of the chrome. It is generally pitted and a few small rust spots (mostly pitting) as the previous owner lived close to the water and didn't polish it too much. Also, I'm trying to figure out how to clean the space between the engine fins and general engine area well (did he ride through paint? white mud?) Glad to be here! Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Welcome from VA Beach. That white could be old soap or wax. Have you tried just spraying with water and blow dry? Try pre spray with diluted Purple Power from Auto Zone. Get a scrub brush, like a small hand cleaning brush and work them nooks. Don't get cut. Rinse, blow dry, repeat until clean. Just a suggestion.

Welcome from Oklahoma. I thought cleaning was for people that didn't have time to ride.

Welcome from Washington state.
On the grit on the jugs try S100. Excellent stuff. I rode from Mesa AZ to Washington a couple of years ago through horrific weather on a VStrom DL1000 and wondered how I was ever going to get it clean. It worked like a charm. I recommend the aerosol can for the first time rather than the spray because it foams up and gets in every crevice. You can get a good set of MC detailing tools with small brushes for those hard to get places for not much money. I have a set. If it is corrosion between the fins you can address that with a good high temp black paint and a can of thinner. Spray the jugs and quickly wipe the over spray on the fins with a thinner (or mineral spirit) soaked cloth. The other option is to remove the paint from the fins with fine grain emory paper or OO steel wool. I've done this on Harleys. On the chrome, there is not much you can do with pitting. If it is not too deep, OOOO steel wool with a bit of WD 40 on it sometimes helps.

Welcome aboard!
I used a product called Pig Snot on the Cyl fins and it looks great for a while then it needs another application. I'd try scrubbing them with a brush and sudsy water first.
