Why no PCV?

One of the things I've never figured out about Vulcans is the lack of Positive Crankcase Ventilation. From what I can see the vent hose exists, but there is no PCV valve. Doesn't this typically mean excess oil consumption and unnecessary carbonization of valves and pistons?

I haven't looked myself, an not in the book either, but I had the idea, but don't know where I got it, that there is a flame arrestor instead. If there is and I don't KNOW there is, it might just be a bronze coil like a ciggy butt lighter sort of, stuffed in a hose.

The snow is going hard now, but there is Johnson Pond behind my trailer. ::)

PVC are usually only one-way valves because of the location and pressure pulses. My understanding is that the hose hooked up to our backing plate doesn't need the one way valve becaue the pressure nor the oil level is nowhere near enough to risk sucking oil into it and blowing it into the throttle body. I've heard some that have overfilled their crankcase and sucked some oil up the tube but in general it doesn't.

Why no PCV?

I cleaned My K&N filter last week, and where the PCV hose enters the bottom of the Thunder backing plate, there was a fine coating of oil about the size of a quarter. The intake on the throttle body was as clean as a whistle.

I think I get a little more oil than that, suckage wise. I'm thinking there's a good road draft through the bottom of the filter on mine and it's promoting this. I notice when you buy some of these breather filters they have a flapper valve in them (presumably) to offset the draft.

For comparison, my intake is stock and I do get a very small amount of oil.It has not been a problem consumption wise, and has not been enough to cause any other problems around the throttle bodies.

Under "normal" conditions there isn't much pressure. But, word of warning..don't let the breather hose get kinked. I got mine kinked when i did something to the intake last year. At low speeds there was no problem. Road to work in the morning without incident. Speeds were mostly under 50. Took the long way home and opened her up to 70-80 on the freeway. Heard a sudden "whoosh!!!" and saw "smoke" coming from the engine area.

The pressure in the crankcase blew the hose off the fitting, spewing oil and oil vapor all over me, the bike and the road. It was ugly...
