Oil prefilter screen filthy
Sure am glad I get such good pointers - the prefilter screen had lots of shavings and a wierd piece of plastic about 1/4" long and thin on it. Looked like garbage bag plastic.
Thanks guys! Login or Register to Remove Ads |

I would stick to always draining your oil through that spot.
Mike, your always welcome bud!

Had a productive day. Did the 600 mile service, checked bolts, changed fluids and washed/waxed shined. Then I drilled out my pipes, mounted some highway pegs, installed quick releases on the bags and installed boogey lights, but am still waiting on the remote to arrive so I'm now pre-wired. Still need to fix the clunk in the headlight, but I'm feeling pretty good.
BTW, the pipes sound much better - gotta spend some time riding to see what I think. Took more time whittling the wood dowel than it did to drill and pull the pipe restrictors. Spent about 25 minutes per pipe, then used a rasp file to smooth it out, vacuumed the inside and painted the ends. Thanks for the great resource! |

One more thing, Who the heck designed the wiring harness to run right next to the Oil Filter? Was tough getting it off because there was no slack in the wiring. Gonna have to address that sooner or later...

Hmmmm...haven't ever had the wiring problem next to the oil filter. In fact, I don't have any wiring running next to mine at all.
Mike....that clunk in your headlight bucket can be solved very easily. The wiring harness in your bucket is evidentally loose. I went to Wally world and bought some 2.5" wide, commercial velcro. Wrapped the whole harness in velcro, but made it to where I could take it off whenever needed. Not a peep out of it now. Also, there is a plastic tie wrap that Kawasaki uses in the bucket to hold the harness in place. After a while, it will start to rattle where the plastic goes through a metal hole. I took the plastic tie off and ran a strip of velcro through it to secure the harness.

Hmmm...assuming it was wiring...it is a thick, black, (same diameter/size as line that runs to rear taillight, so I thought that was what it was. It is on the Rightside framerail (sitting on bike) and leaves less than 1/8" clearance with the filter. Good to know no-one else has this as it means I can probably relocate it. Only thing I had anyone else add was the F&S Lightbar, and I guess it's possible that might be it, but would sure be a silly way to wire it. I'll trace it down.
Thanks Trip, already got some commercial velcro, will wait so I can just enjoy the ride for a couple days. |

I've had the problem with the hoses in the way as well around the oil filter. Those are vent hoses, and there are about three or four of them hanging down alongside the oil filter. I would be careful in rerouting them, just because they are routed down that way for a reason and if you were to reroute them you might take out some slack needed for them to hang. My suggestion, just be careful and patient when changing the filter. It is a pain though!!

It's the other drain plug thats underneath the left side cover across from the heal shift lever just under the frame. Undo it and you'll find a 2 inch long spring with the screen down the middle of it. It's called the oil screen plug in the manual.

Click here and blow it up. It's part # 16097
http://tinyurl.com/3bpvub You access it on the port side of your bike. The bolt is just inside the frame. Make sure you don't lose the washer. Wash the screen with solvent. It's a good place to drain the oil as it sits lower than the oil drain plug under the engine casing. You can do it while on the kickstand. |
