Oil Capacity
According to the service manual for 2005-2008 1600:
3.1 quarts when filter is not removed. 3.3 quarts when filter is removed. 3.7 quarts when engine is disassembled and completey dry. The torque specs for the drain plug and the oil screen plug is 14 ft-lbs. The manual says to replace the O-ring on the screen plug and the gasket on the drain plug with new ones. To get the right amount of oil added I would suggest that you put in enough to come up to the center of the sight glass (with the bike level of course) crank it up and let it run long enough to fill up the oil filter. Shut it off and let it set for a few minutes and then top it off. When my dealer has changed the oil they always fill it to the top of the sight glass.

Most gallon jugs have a guage on the side next to the spout. I find I use 3.5 qt's. on a oil change with a filter. I also keep several different sizes of meausring cups in the garage to use as needed for this type of maintenance.

Macon is one of my fuel stops when I ride to or from Ohio. I prefer riding across northern Mo than going across Iowa on I-80.

you'll certainly know if there is too much oil when you put the bike into gear.

Doc, are you checking your oil on the kickstand? That would explain why you get so much oil in there
