starter removal / test
this is a continuation from the starting problem in a different thread.
Now I need to know if removing the starter is a difficult thing to do and is there a way to test/check it without removal? Login or Register to Remove Ads |

starter removal / test
According to the service manual for the 1600, it can be complicated. To remove the starter you must first remove the radiator. To remove the radiator you must first remove the fuel tank. So, drain and remove the fuel tank, drain the cooling system and remove radiator and then you can get to the starter. You might want to consult a manual.
I couldn't find anything in the manual about any way to test the starter. If the starter is turning the engine over OK but the engine isn't firing up then the problem may be something other than the starter. If the starter isn't turning the engine over at all I would suspect a defective starter relay, starter switch, bad starter or maybe a blown diode in the circuit. If it's just turning over too slow and it's not a weak battery it could be bad contacts on the starter relay or a bad starter. This may not be much help. Perhaps someone else may have some better info.

The gas tank comes off very easy, it takes a few minutes longer to remove the first time because your looking for hose connections. Once youve done, it comes off in about 4-5 minutes. The rad is also very straightforward to remove. Once you have the starter off you can have it tested at a shop, where they can tell you if it needs repair or replacement. It beats paying a shop their high hourly rate to remove a few simple parts.
