Bluing pipes

Hey BD; tell me about bluing pipes and how normal it is. After a nice long ride today, and after I put her into the garage and giving her a once over, I notice that my new Cobra's were bluing all ready at the head outlet point. I compared it to my stock exhaust that was still laying beside the bike on the garage floor and these as well were bluing. Now the heat shields hide all this, but I was just wondering if it was a condition of too lean an engine or normal. I see lots of bikes, particularly HD that have blue pipes half way down the length.

Bluing pipes

When I started riding in the early sixties none of the bikes had heat sheilds. Just chromed exhaust pipes. As soon as you started riding them the pipes would begin to turn blue, starting at the outlet port. As time went by the blueing would extend way down the pipes, depending on how hot they got. This is perfectly normal and not much to be done about it. I love the sheilds on my Nomad. Always looks nice and shiny regardless of how crappy the pipes underneath get.

Bluing pipes

Blueing is normal, however I don't think it is as bad as it used to be in the old days. There are a few products that do remove it if you stay on top of it. My last bike had considerable blueing on the pipes and I used a product called Autosol, its a creme metal polish to remove most of it.

Thanks to the both of you for your replies. These answers are what make this forum the best for our bikes. Everyone here contributes in their own way and it's always helpful. You've put my mind at ease on this subject....

There is a product called Blueaway and it works. I used it all the time in 1983 on my Harley so maybe it is still made?
