Repair and painting of saddlebags

I have multiple scratches on my saddlebags for my 05 that I want to repair them and get them repainted. Has anyone done this and if so, what worked best for you?

I had it done as I had a small accident the second week I had my Nomad. I wasn't used to width and scraped a concrete barrier. The dealer fixed the gouges and painted it with colorite, which wasn't cheap. It was like $270 for one bag door for labor, bondo an paint. That learned me quickly. It came out good though...

$270 for one door? I'd hate to see what it will cost when I want to smooth my doors. Probably be cheaper to buy brand new Vaquero doors unless I completely change the color of the bike.

It probably was cheaper. This was over 4 years ago. May be it was $175. I just remember that they paint was crazy expensive. The thing is, I gave all the bills associated with the bike to the new owner.

I looked. I couldn't find the cost as it must have been done on the phone or in person, but I did find out what the parts would have cost then. $422. Whatever I paid was a lot cheaper than that.

If I'm reading bikebandit site correctly, the Vaquero lid is about $185 but the Nomad (1600) is almost $400? Three little chrome strips are NOT worth $200+ IMHO.

Those strips were $40 apiece and the latch got scraped too. The prices I got were quoted from the dealer at the time.

Had a friend hit me on my way back from the Maggie Valley Rally and he pretty much put the hurt on my left had bag. Cost for the bag was $1,135.59 (complete), $ 57.22 for each strip and $350.00 for color match. Pretty hefty total but it looks like new.

No vaseline here...... Thankfully his insurance covered everything.

A motorcycle is a luxury, no one really needs one. Anything that is considered a luxury is going to be expensive. This includes parts and accessories.

You got a good point, there. Just doesn't make any sense that some of these parts (for any bike) are so expensive. It doesn't cost any more to make a fender for a Nomad than it does for a Chevy truck. (Relatively speaking.)

Because they work better, look nicer, and last longer. The fact that they cost less is just a bonus.
