pulling to the left
Afternoon Folks,
as some of you may know, I was in a bit of a crash last week. I'm recovering well, and now it's time to start thinking about what to do with the bike. After a long chat with my wife, we've decided that I need to fix it, regardless of what I do (keep or sell), since it's a bit unethical to try and sell a bike with problems. so from the crash, I need new crashbars/engine guards on the left (front and rear), along with a new saddlebag door latch on the left. If anyone has some extras of these laying around that you'd like to sell please send me a message. Now as for the underlying issue.... I had a wobble when I went down. I've got some suggestions on another thread on how to handle this. The main intent of this thread - stearing pull... I just put on new tires, front and rear, with dyna beads. This seemed to have helped a bit of the low speed shake on the handle bars - but I did notice that I still cant' take my hands off the bars, because the bike wants to turn left. What are you suggestions on how to address this? I suspect that I need to look at the stearing head, and greese the bearings (I didn't get a chance to do this before my trip), and possibly replace the bearings. From gadget's site, it seems that this adjustment normally is a bit loose. Also, I have tried to run a secondary ground between my fairing to the main body/frame of the bike, but I read about that ground link causing some premature reduced lifspan on the bearings. Considering the bike is now over 75k kms, it might be time for new ones (not sure how previous owner maintained that item). Are there any other things you would suggest I look to for this item? Thanks Brian

I didn't know you suffered any crash. Sorry to read it.
How much pull to the l eft is there? The crown of a road will want to send the bike left some. T he more the crown there is to a road the more the bike will go left. You could have notchy head bearings which would maybe do that too, and or so much slop at the swing arm seals the swin g arm is causing that effect as well. I don't have any parts you need. If I did i woud just send em up. I suggest over tightening the head bearing a bit, then back i t off to seat the bearings. This means make the steering somewhat too stiff, then a little too loose, then back to just right, then lock it down. Too stiff is the forks refuse to fall over to either side. Too loose is the forks will fall over and bounce part way back and fall again. Just right is the forks fall over but don't bounce, and since wear will happen a smidgin tighter to lock down.

I suspect you need to look at the forks and the fork clamps.

Ckeck to see if your front wheel is set straight and the forks are aligned properly in the clamps.

thanks for the suggestions.
Now, and suggestions on a site/you tube for what I should be looking for? IF anything is off, I will certianly let a mechanic fix it this time....

no, the pulling was before the crash. I haven't rode the bike since, but am trying to identify what might have contributed to the crash (or at least fix something that needs to be corrected)

My bike had a weeble-wobble when it would get a puff of a cross-wind. No pulling though. It fixed itself one day when it felt like someone hit one of the triple trees with a big hammer.
I think one of the fork tubes was in a twist in the triple tree clamps and the tension just finally relieved itself. If you've got a way to do it, loosen the triple tree clamps, one side at a time, and bounce the front end just a little to see if it will cause anything to happen. |
