I went down

I haven't posted in a while. And, I certainly haven't read anything on here for the past two weeks. I went down on the 11th of Aug.

I was in a right turn lane, going forward til I could make my right turn (about 15-20 yards down the road. A car in the lane next to me, who was going straight, decided to stop and allow a car going in the opposite direction of travel, turn left in front of us and across my lane. I had about 1 and a half car lengths to recognize the danger and get stopped.

I laid on the brakes and started to fishtail. I was almost stopped when, at one point of the fishtail, My bars were turned to the right. I still had the brakes on so.......Down I went...hard!

I broke my right tibia in two places. A corner of the tibial plateau broke off and I have a spiral fracture going down from the top.

I've had surgery to have everything braced and bolted back in place. I'm non-weight bearing for another 6 - 8 weeks. After, I get to gradually put weight on the leg. Then I can drive.

The bike is in good shape. A small scuff on the bag. The bag bar and the engine bars are scratched up. The handle bars are tweaked. I don't know if it's an adjustment or the bars are actually bent and need to be replaced.

Watch those folks who don't follow the rules of the road. You can't make a left hand turn unless the traffic is clear. You'd think people could follow simple rules but, they don't.

Oh well, I guess I can ride next year. I just need to get the tank filled up and some Sta-Bil thrown in for the winter.

Russ

Holy crap, how unfortunate. Sounds like you will be OK, did the other persons vehicle get damage and are they responsible for your personal care and bike repairs? Is the person that allowed that vehicle to cross in front of you at fault? Here in Vermont they would be.

Sure glade you are relatively Ok as well as the bike. I guess some people think because an other vehicle waves them through or what ever, it is clear to do so and don't bother double checking for them selves. Hope you have a speedy recovery.

When you get time, I'd be interested in hearing how the legal/insurance stuff works on this. Did the cars stop? Did they admit anything?

I'm a little unclear about the accident. The oncoming car turned into the lane that you were going to turn into for your right turn? And you went down before actual contact?

Sounds like a nasty break. Heal up.

Why in hell people stop in traffic is beyond me.
I will guarantee the guy who waved the other car through did not stop after you went down, correct?
I would be willing to bet the guy who pulled in front of you didn't stop either.
I had a guy stop in the right lane of a 35 mph zone to let a man and two little kids cross the highway ::)
It is a good thing I was paying attention and had time to stop.
