2003 1600 Classic oil change

I helped a buddy change his oil on his 03 classic. The oil filter was a canister style, not a screw on type. What is up with this? Anyone ever hear of this on their bikes??

He pulled off the part number off the canister and it is a kawi part.

I have seen a cartridge inside a screw on type. How was this one attached?

That canister was a recall and retrofit. My 03 Nomad has the same retrofit. And you can only buy the new filter from a dealer.

what dougster said is correct.i also had one that was recalled because of
to much pressure causing problems with the original screw on filter.they
installed a base plate which required the use of the new cartrige type filter.

Is there any other option? Anyway to covert it back to a screw on type?

It looked to me like one might be able to remove the base plate they added, and it would be back to original? I haven't tried it, so I don't know.
