Are all Harley Davidson trunks created equally? If it is HD brand they are all pretty much the same right?

I have a 1982 Harley trunk. It seems that about every 10 years or so they change them just a little. The nice thing about a Harley trunk is that you can get parts from Harley Davidson. I wanted new hinges for mine and the local H.D. dealer had them in stock. My local Kawasaki dealer carries virtually nothing for parts, everything has to be ordered.

They have a King tour pak, a chopped, and a razor. Not to mention the slight differences over the years with lights, logos, chrome, antennas, etc. I would try to stay later model if only to ensure less wear and tear on the components and fiberglass, or plastic.

You have exactly what I am looking for, that looks great. I want a King tour pak with the minimalist back pad.

I'm planning on painting it and do some work to it, so I'm not too concerned about wear (within reason). The new ones, with nice paint sell for $500-$700, but the older ones with some slight damage, or missing hinges sell for $200-$300. I just want to make sure they are all about the same size and sturdiness.

If you want size, then get the King tour pak. For looks go either, chopped or razor. Go to HD's site and look for part and accessories for a touring bike. You will see the size dimensions.

You have the King Tour pack that just has lights on side and then you have the Ultra tour pack that has the lights on the back with turn signals I have noticed at some time if you look at the material they are made of they changed it.

Not really. They have the Tourpak and the King Tourpak, I believe they are the same size, the difference is the King version has lights. Then they have a chopped Tourpack which isn't as tall. They also have the leather covered one. The older tourpaks were made of fiberglass, the newer ones are ABS plastic, if I remember right.

CJ is correct, the older ones are fiberglass and the newer ones are PVC or something similar. Mine has no lights or antenna and the backrest is for a chopped tour pak. I paid $300 for the trunk on E-Bay,
$200.00 to have it repaired and painted and $40.00 for the new backrest cover. I have also replaced the hinges, only because I wanted more "bling" from them. I think the hinges were $30.00 or there abouts. I looked a long time to find one that didn't have a bunch of holes that needed to be filled. I do like the convenience. Good luck with whatever you get.

The King tour pak, and the Ultra tour pak are the same size, only difference is the Ultra has the tail/running lights/antenna mounts. The "Chopped tour pak is the same size as the other two, except it is not as thick (up & down, same lid will fit all three), then you have the leather covered tour pak (I'm not familiar with them). Up thru 2005 they are made of fiberglass, afterward, they are made of ABS (black) plastic, and not quiet as sturdy as the fiberglass ones. Starting in 2007, the side marker lights wrap around the back, or if no lights, have a chrome accent there. The one I have is an '02 Ultra.

Mine is a King Tour Pak, but doesn't have the lights, just an antenna mount. The ones from an Ultra Classic have the rear tailights, and the side marker lights. You can also get them with just the side marker lights or add them yourself aftertwards.

As mentioned in the other replies, the King Tour & Tour pak are the same size in width & length and depth (chopped tour pak is a couple of inches shallower in depth) all of these are side hinged/opening the primary difference are tail lights & drilled holes for speaker pods on the king ultra classic, backrest pads are the same for both. The FXR/FXT tour packs are a little smaller in width & length and are rear hinged/opening they use a fifferent size backrest pad.

Wasn't someone on here selling the leather one just last week? You might want to check some of the threads from the last week or so.

Mine is off an ultra I got on ebay.. has all the lights, trunk liner and upper organizer in lid. mine was painted to match with a wompus rack so I just had to bolt it on and wire it. I paid 800. I don't know how much the "chopped" ones are chopped. but I tell you.. it's damn nice having some size back there.. I'm amazed at some of the stuff I can fit in it.

If you buy one on eBay, be sure it is not too damaged - since they are usually removed from wrecks. I did get to buy a second lid because the one that came with my first Ultra trunk was broken at one of the latches and it was not easily repairable in a sturdy way - but the second lid in mint condition was only about $60.
