Coaster installation effect?
I have Chuckster's coasters that I want to install but I would like to understand the mechanics behind it.
This is from Gadget's site: "A bit of background. Reed valves are mounted on the right front of the #1 (front) cylinder and left rear of the #2 cylinder. Their purpose is to inject air into the exhaust stream immediately after the exhaust valve which causes any hydrocarbons that escaped the explosion in the combustion chamber to burn. This typically creates a popping from the exhaust when the throttle is closed and the bike is decelerating. Most riders can't even hear the explosions with stock exhaust but with aftermarket pipes the constant popping can get rather annoying." http://www.gadgetjq.com/rv_removal.htm My questions: Where do the hydrocarbons go if they are not burned? Could there be an adverse consequence from the coaster installation? I currently have a TFI and V&H pipes and preparing to install Chuckster's dual plates. (2007 Nomad) Thank you. Don't worry about the hydro-carbons. At the worst they will float up here to the Pacific Northwest and extend out riding season.

Don't know the answer to you question, but I do know that there are hundreds of thousands of miles of combined use by various forum members with no issues that I am aware of.

Isn't this essentially what we did on my bike in Cortez by just plugging (or marbleing) that hose behind the right solenoid under the right hand dog bowl? No more popping ever since we did that easy 10 cent fix. What is the advantage (or is there one) of the coaster plates to make this same remedy?

Scott, there are no adverse effects, and the hydrocarbons just go out the mufflers. Doing the coasters just gits rid of a little weight, and clutter off the engine. Like Kris said, you can achieve the same results (no backfiring) by just plugging the tube that feeds the reed valves. Doing either of these mods won't change the horsepower any, it just gits rid of the backfiring.

Like everyone else said. I did my 07 a year ago and all is well plus without all that useless tubbing it's easier to clean the engine.

Installed the Chuckster's coasters on my nomad last week...It sure cleaned up the bike for me. I couldn't be happier with the quality. When Joe sent them to me I simply got out my little black spray can and gave them a shot and they look like they belong since it matches the engine. Jody

I would think that Chucksters kits should help to get more air flow around the engine. Installing the coasters and his air intake mods should allow us to remove the crossover tube. All of this stuff out of the way would let more cooling air get to the cylinders.

There are no adverse affects putting the coasters on, it just stops extra gas from being burned off in the pipes creating the back fire sound. It does help get rid of some clutter of the boxes and some hoses..
