Questions on replacing the fuel tank

Getting ready to replace the tank on my '06 so I can send the old out out for paint. I have a couple questions:

First, what's the best way to drain the tank without siphoning it? Or is that my only option?

Second, I looked over the exploded parts view, and the only thing I think I might need is a new o-ring for the fuel pump.. but I'm not sure. Anyone swap out a tank before? Any new gaskets/seals/o-rings I need to replace?

Thanks in advance.

Questions on replacing the fuel tank

I dunno Jim. Maybe riding a few miles after the low fuel light comes on. Then remove the tank and turn it upside down over a suitable container. Even after doing that you will probably still have a little trapped that will come out when you remove the pump. I've never had to completely evacuate my tank.

Questions on replacing the fuel tank

Have had the tank off my 06 and fuel pump removed and reinstalled. The "O" ring was like new and did not require replacement. I think it is about a $15 part from the dealer.

Questions on replacing the fuel tank

I would try to run the tank down low and then turn it over into a bucket. When you remove the pump assembly on the bottom, that should allow you to drain out the remaining little bit of fuel.

I agree with Mitch and Steve. Run most of the gas out then turn it over once it is off and shake out what you can of the remaining gas.

Questions on replacing the fuel tank

Trust me,,,,,,,,,,you can disconnect your fuel lie and turn your switch on and drain your tank fast! Get a piece hose and place it at the disconnect and run it into a can.

I had a left over thought, it maybe ain't a good idea to run the tank completely try.

You can drain it or run it dry, either way, there is still going to be a little slushing around in the tank that you can't get out and that will take a few days to just evaperate.

You may not need to replace the gasket for the fuel pump, but make sure when you reinstall the pump the the gasket is lined up perfect. If it is even a little off it will pinch and cause you pump to link.

Laughed out loud at this one. Brilliant! I will do exactly that. Don't have much of a choice of running it dry if I'm swapping tanks... Utah, thanks for the tip - is it the O-Ring or is there a separate gasket as well?

Just a simple o ring. Look like black rubber band.

Questions on replacing the fuel tank

There is also a gasket under the fuel gage. If you need to remove the gage I would recommend a new one it is not a o-ring on the gage.

You mean fuel pump, right?

I thought an O-ring, is just a mechanical gasket in the shape of a torus, or an O, right? That being the case. that is what my 1600 used.

Questions on replacing the fuel tank

There are two holes in the bottom of the tank one for the fuel pump which uses a o-ring type gasket and one for the fuel gauge which uses a standard fiber type gasket. These are the part numbers for the 06 nomad. I had to replace a tank on a 06 classic and they are the same as the nomad as far as these are concerned.

Yeah, that didn't work so well! haha..I disconnected the line, got all set up with a hose on the end of it, ready to see a constant stream of gas headed into my spare tank. What'd I get? About 5 seconds of the pump running before the pump shut off. Ready to crank... DOH! ::)

I ended up yanking the tank off with 3 gallons in it and turning it upside down into my container. (One of these days I'll learn to listen, Mitch ) Worked great, went fast. One thing though, I found about 10 little tiny bb's in the bottom.. strange.. along with a little bit of dirt and other crap.

New tank went on without a hitch. Took the kid and I about three hours.
