Wiring a Stebel Horn
I need a little help figuring out how to wire the Stebel using the aux fuse panel for power and the original horn button. Which wires run to the aux fuse panel and horn button and which ones go to the Stebel? The diagram on Gadget shows installation using a relay switch going straight to the battery. With the Aux fuse panel I should not need the relay, but I can not get a picture in my little pea brain of where the wires should run if you take the relay switch out of the picture. Any help will be most appreciated.

Wiring a Stebel Horn
I am not able to answer your question. But I did mount a Stebel Horn to my Nomad a few weeks ago.
I wired my Stebel to the battery with an in line fuse link. I guess it doesnt matter where the power comes from as long as the wire is big enough to handle the 20 amp fuse I believe it required. However I understood the Nomad horn button was not designed to handle that much amps so a relay is used to protect the horn button. I was not smart enough or willing to chance not using the relay that came with the horn. I just followed the Gadget instructions. Good Luck. http://www.bikerhiway.com/installinf...stebelhorn.pdf |

Like Mac said the relay is needed to break up the LOAD of the HORNs..or even running lights.. MC switchs may handle the load, but may wear out faster w/a heavy load.. I m doing running lights this week and will be wiring them w/a relay like you have and the one on Gadgets page!! i. I suck at explaining things so hope it helps,, Rich

Sorry, can't give the instructions you need, but I would highly recommend that anyone getting the Stebel compact horn to also get the wiring kit that includes the relay and easy to follow instructions, I think its about $20 additional. That's what I did and even a rank-amateur like myself had no problem wiring it up. Attaching the horn is different since it likely will not bolt-on and you have to rig something - you may recall a recent thread of mine, it fell off at 70 mph. Got the new one on now with a lock nut and locktight, it ain't a going to come off!

I agree with Ells, must have the wiring kit which has the heavy duty relay and all wires needed(i did have to purchase some extra wire since I ran my relay back under the side cover), they dont give you too much wire. Follow the instructions, quite easy. Good Luck you will enjoy it. Also I made my own bracket out of 3/16 stock aluminum about 5 inches long by 1 1/4 tall, drill a couple holes and it matches the horn. :-)

I would recommend that you use a relay especially if you want to use the existing horn button to operate the horn. The stock horn switch will probably not last too long if you try to run the Stebel through it. You can use the stock switch to operate the relay. You can run the hot power through the relay from the aux panel if it has a 20 amp position available. If not run directly from the battery to the relay using an inline 20 amp fuse. Go from the relay to the horn in either case and ground the horn at any convenient place, such as where you bolt it to the frame. Hope this helps some.

This is easy. You would want to connect the + wire from the OEM horn to the relay on terminal 86, the 12v lead from the aux fuse block to terminal 30. The output to the + terminal of the Stebel horn is terminal 87, the relay ground is terminal 85. Connect the negative (-) side of the Stebel to a good ground connection.

Cactusjack,
Thank you, sir. That is exactly what I needed. I hate being electromoronic but that is the hand I was dealt. The diagram makes it easy to visualize. Thanks for taking the time. |

Wiring a Stebel Horn

This photo shows how I mounted the Stebel to the bolt on the top of the engine crash bar. I made an L shaped bracket from some scrap and painted it black. ![]() Notice the two black wires going through the aluminum bracket. One of these wires is the hot lead to the horn and comes from terminal 87 on the relay. The other wire is the ground wire for the horn. This wire has a ring terminal on the end and is attached under the bolt holding the bracket and the crash bar. This next photo gives a larger view showing how the Stebel is mounted above the stock horn. ![]() This photo below shows how I mounted the relay behind the left side cover. The relay is held in place with a nylon cable tie. Sorry about the focus on this shot. Referring to the great diagram CactusJack posted: Relay terminal 30 is on the top and has a red 14 gauge wire attached. This is a hot lead coming directly from the battery. It has an inline 20 amp fuse. Terminal 87 is at the bottom and has a black 14 gauge wire going directly to the horn. Terminal 86 is the closest or outside terminal. The small black wire attached to this terminal comes directly from the new horn button seen in the last photo. Terminal 85 is at the back and can barely be seen. The small black wire attached here goes to a frame ground. Since the photo is a little blurry it's hard to tell that there is also a small black wire connected to terminal 30 along with the red wire. This black wire is the hot lead going to the new horn button. ![]() Since I wanted to be able to use the original horn as well as the Stebel, I installed a new push button to operate the Stebel. This photo shows the push button as well as a toggle switch I installed to operate my headlight modulator. Both of these switches were purchased at Radio Shack. The push button is very easy to depress with my index finger. If I want to use the original horn it still works off the original switch. I use the original when I don't want to blast somebody. The Stebel IS loud! ![]() If you don't want or need to keep the original horn the only thing different you would need to do is to just run the hot lead from the original horn back to terminal 86 on the relay. My thanks to Cactus Jack for the great diagram. Cheers, Bob
