1600 Nomad actual recommended tire pressures
I need to ask you Nomad Tire Guru's about the proper recommended tire pressure on stock issue tires, on a 2008 1600 Nomad.
Somewhere, I seen someone say 40 lbs front & 42 lbs rear. The manual states 32 psi front and 40 psi rear. Now I am 168 lbs in my birthday suit. With my gear on, and a few accessories and luggage on the bike, for a average run., What would be the best recommended tire pressures.. Any help in this field would be greatly appreciated. Would like to get the most mileage I can out of these stock tires, before I go to the ME880 Metzeler tires. Thanks BikerJohn ??? Login or Register to Remove Ads |

The manual pressures are HIGHLY conservative, to prevent a front-end washout: a disaster from which no newbie could recover. If the rear end slides it's far less dangerous, so they bias the pressures such that the rear will slip first. Forget the manual unless you are a serious newb and still want that safety net.
If you don't have a passenger then you might go to 38 front 40 rear, but the lower you go the faster they'll get noisy. Now with the pressures high, they'll wear out in the center faster, but one way or another you'll get rid of the rear one around 6000 or 7000 miles & the front around 20,000 because it will either be worn out in the center or lumpy and noisy from cupping. I actually ran my front to around 23,000, but it was down to the wear bars and noisy as h3ll on the curves. |

If you live where I do you will only wear the center.Even sport bikes in Nebraska wear out the center.

I tend to run 40 front 42 rear regardless of load, 880s
MS031, You've got to find some curves. |

I've been running 38 front, 42 rear with 880's. (11,000 miles on the rear so far.) No cupping and I like the feel. Tried 36/40. Can't say I actually notice any difference in handling. May stay 36/40 since it should slightly increase mileage due to the marginally broader area on the road surface.

Metzlers need to be run to there max pressure or thye will wear out faster! I run all my tires @ max pressure - don't care if the ride is a little harsher - I have had only tow tire failures ( knock on wood) in over 37 years and one was a defective Metzler ( seperated) and one Maxxis ( tire for my GL1000) out of round - on a side bar it should have been caught when the Stealer put it on!!!! so I wouldn't have had to turn around and bring it back!

There should be a sticker inside the LH sidecover that gives you the tire pressure info. But I would run the pressures that Caddmann Recomended.

The Metzler rep. I spoke with told me to run 41psi front and back. 150/80H-16 front & 180/70HR-16 on the rear.

Motorcycle tires are very sensitive to pressure when it comes to longevity.I check my pressure a couple if times per week when I'm riding. During the winter when the bike is sitting I still check them every other week.I don't want them sitting underinflated either.

I'm running 40 front, 42 rear. But I am taking the bike to the shop tomorrow for tires. 7200 and rear is pretty much gone. The front is not to bad but I want to change both as I'm going to Metz.
Next time I will change front once for every two rear changes. Well thats the plan now anyway :)

I have 25k on my 2005. I replaced the original oems at 14k last year. I replaced them with the same oem's. I always run the recommended pressures, I get 40-42mpg average and never had a slipping or cupping issue either. I was told that the reason the middle wears out on cruisers is cruiser bikes, for the most part, ride straight and level. Folks riding sport tourers or sport bikes are more curve oriented so they wear the side walls more. I think cruiser tires and sport bike tires are a bit different design too. My 2 cents.

Hey... Thanks for all the good info so far... I will be going to the Metzler tires when my stockers wear out.. But that's a few thousand miles from now. Right now I'm still breaking in my new ride.

I have a 2006 Metzler me880s and i run 41 front and 46 rear. I was running 42 rear but at high speeds it liked to wobble a little and you could see evedense of that on the sidewall. Found a website that addressed this issue. There were alot of people that had the same problem. 46 psi now no problem.
