Why mount rear tire reversed on front?

I'm breaking in my CT on my 1500 and will be replacing the front tire next week. My question is....why are some folks mounting a rear MT on the front, reversed. Is it for stability, more tread, help with hydroplaning, ????

I tried to search but didn't really find much on the subject. Any help is greatly appreciated. I was thinking about a Dunlop D404. I currently have about 350 miles on my Vredestein 175/75/16.

Thanks in advance for everyone's input!

Look at #3. It's from Metzler's own faq section.

Or straight from the horses mouth

Why mount rear tire reversed on front?

I was told that the braking forces when using the front brake a very similar to acceleration forces on the rear wheel, so by reversing the tire the force is applied in the same direction.

Poppy, can you tell us where you got that 175/75/16 tire? I think it will fit on my 1500 Gold Wing.

i filled out the on-line information form and got a call back the next day. They had to order the tire from Holland since no one had it in stock. Approx $150.....

Why mount rear tire reversed on front?

I thought the tire was reversed when placed on the front to confuse the tire so it wouldn't know if it was going or coming.

Hey, just having a little fun.

Why mount rear tire reversed on front?

Just put a rear on my front, & in the direction in which it called for, with no issues have about 1k miles on it. I don't see why someone would want to run it in reverse for the reason of hydroplaining, on my tire that would be like running a directional in reverse, that would cause the water to be forced into the center of the tire, I don't know why anybody would want that. I'll keep you posted though getting ready to leave out for the SERally on it this morning. Good luck with choice Poppy.

Why mount rear tire reversed on front?

from metzler website
# Rear tires can be mounted at front wheels?
When producing tires, the top cap is heated with an angle bump on the carcass. To prevent the detachment of the assembled edges the tire has to be mounted (concerning the main stress: acceleration force at the rear wheel or brake force at the front wheel) corresponding to the respective declaration.
Therefore the declaration of the driving direction at the tires sidewall is a very important safety regard and has to be noticed absolute. It is not allowed to mount front tires at rear wheels.
In case you intend to mount a rear tire on a front wheel it has to be assembled contrary to the driving direction declaration (direction of the arrow at the tires sidewall). Please observe the standards in your country. In any doubts we kindly ask you to consult your dealer.

cant remember where i read about water dispersment and hydroplaning.

Why mount rear tire reversed on front?

Ive never had a problem with hydroplaning, and Ive only used front tires and travelled through some good downpours.
Does the bike work that much better with a rear tire on the front?
I can't see installing a rear tire unless you had a flat somewhere and had no choice but to install one.

Why mount rear tire reversed on front?

I installed a rear tire (backwards) on my Nomad because the rear tire (Avon Venom) has a deeper tread and a larger carrying capacity than a front tire. Therefore, I expect more mileage out of the tire. After mounting it I noticed that the bike was much easier to lean into the turns and continues to do so after several thousand miles. I am running a car tire in the rear.

Wow. I came into this thread expecting some sort of joke. Replacing my front tire is in the near future.

I've read about the advantages. Other than cost, what are some drawbacks?

A rear tire has more rubber than a front tire.

It will last many more miles than a front, tire when mounted on the front.

That is why we do it. It's not some secret thing, just a way to get more mileage from a tire.

Why mount rear tire reversed on front?

So far as I know a ft tire mounted backwards on the ft of a bike is usually a tire intended for the rear axel, and not a mc tire intended to be a ft tire at all.

And when this is done it is for water displacement, nothing more.

What are the sizes you all are using for installing a RT on front? Using the same rim? Who are you using to install?
