This weekends project

I was on call for work this weekend and couldn't stray far from the house, so when I wasn't babysitting Java developers and DBA's, I did a project I'd had planned on the bike for some time now. I did a little wiring.

I added a 6-fuse accessory block, controlled by a 30a relay to turn it on/off with the ignition. I also re-ran and concealed some wiring I'd done for some Optronics driving lights I added.

Finding the right place to mount the fuse block was difficult, but I decided to put it behind the left side cover and attached it to the charcoal canister. Here's a pic:

Only the 10a fuse at the upper right is used, the other 10a and the 15a are just spares and aren't hot.

I ran 5 14g wires from the headlight bucket, under the tank through the battery area, to the fuse block. One of them was the 12v switched power from a splice in the headlight bucket I had used previously. 1 of the remaining 4 was used for my driving lights and the other 3 are spares for future use. All I have to do is make my connection to one of the unused wires and pop in a fuse and I'm good to go. I used 12g wires for the 12v battery connection to the relay and from the relay to the fuse block.

Here's a pic of the Optronics lights in action (and yours truly) in the bike garage, and a closeup of one of the lights:

Although the driving lights are controlled by the relay, I did install an inline marine-grade toggle switch in the left side neck cover. It was about the only part of the bike I wasn't too nervouse about drilling a hole in. I have 2 unused connections on the fuse block still available for future use.

Sound like the same I'm working on now. Fortunately I didn't have the canister. so I mounted the block and relay in the top and put three more in the tool pouch box space. still have to make all my connections. Hope to finish this week. It makes for a nice setup and I don't have wires running everywhere.

I wish I didn't have the canister to deal with, it would have made the installation a lot smoother. I plan to add another set of driving lights mounted up next to the headlight, so this will make that install a lot easier. I'm nearly done fabricating my mounting brackets for those, but I'm waiting on my lights to get shipped from Canada before I can get those mounted up. Hopefully I'll have them by my next weekend on call, so I have something to do since I'm stuck close to my home office.

I'm pretty sure now I know why I don't attempt projects like that. CJ, you made it seem so easy, and I suppose it was for you, but I would end up with a huge fire if I attempted to do that.

It really isn't that difficult. Doing the actual work on the connections, etc. was the easy part. The tough part was figuring out how to route things. I'm pretty picky about my work and it took some time to get things "just so". Having said that, there are some improvements I'd like to make.

I went to the website of the company that makes the lights, which just happens to be in Canada. They don't sell online and their closest vendor to where I live is in Denver (900 miles from Phoenix). I know a gal who lives in the Toronto area from the Suzuki Boulevard forum and she is getting me a set and sending them to me. She had to special order them, but she should have them this week. I wanted these lights specifically because of their size.

The brackets are almost done, I finished shaping and grinding them last night, now I just have to polish them up. It was a lot of work, but with a Sawzall and a sabre saw for the rough cuts and a drill press with sanding drums to smooth them out, I managed to get it done. I only hope they don't look stupid or too homemade.

Were you following my exchange with her a couple of weeks ago on the VR, or did you just guess? She really went out of her way for me. I told her I'd throw in some extra $$ for her trouble and she could treat herself and Tanker to some Labatt's or Molson on me, and she refused. What a gal!
