Lower Rail Install ??? GOT IT -photos

<s>I am trying to install the lower bag rails I got off ebay. For the life of me I can not figure out how to make the connection with the muffler bolts work. There is simply not enough room with any combination of stock and provided bolts to get it together. Anyone have a picture?</s>

Nevermind! I talked with Kris and he straigtened me out. The front looks like it should go over the channel, but it goes outboard of it. Easy as pie.

I think you don't use the muffler bolts. Did the rails come with different ones? A friend from this forum put mine on, and when I left I had bolts left over that I saved in case I ever take of the rails.

Charlie, I had the same problem when I installed mine before I mounted my trailer hitch. If yours are made the same as mine, I remember trying to stab the C channel bracket in the wrong place. It's been a while so my recall isn't that great, but when I figured it out they fit perfectly. My hitch is on now so mine are hanging in my attic.

I don't use any muffler bolts at all. My lower rails connect where the rear crashbars mount with two bolts, and at the back bracket that supports the hard bags with one bolt. They were already on the bike so I don't know if any hardware was switched when installing them.

You are right. I was wrong about the front mount. It is the rear crashbar.

Wrong

Right

Charlie, I had the exact same problem a month ago when I put mine on. That front end looks like it should slip over the top, but it doesn't.

That is exactly what I did wrong Charlie. It is kind of misleading when you look at the ends.

I too am glad I'm not the only one who struggled with this procedure. It took me several hours and countless cuss words to finally figure out how to install these things:)

I installed mine this winter! I just noticed yesterday, after taking off the bags, that the hinges of the bags are scrapping on the chrome bar! I am thinking of bending the bottom bar down a bit? What ya think?????

My hinges also touch the lower rail as well. I havn't scratched them yet, but they have always done that.
Bending them down would probably help as they keep the door from opening fully.

I installed an additional (approx) 3/8" to 1/2" Spacer to slightly pull the guards outward a little bit more. If you look down the side of the hard saddlebag, the guards in stock position didn't quit come out far enough. Also viewed from the rear of the bike, stock position of the guards seemed to not truely be lined-up with the hard bags. So if I actually do accidentally rub up against something with my saddlebags, there is a little chance that the chrome rails might actually do something,.. like protect my bike.
