Tank whistle AFTER FI2000R install ..
Hi friends!
A quick question to see if anyone else has experienced this. I installed a Cobra FI2000R last week and was fairly happy with the results. However, since installing it I find my gas cap loves whistling ... a lot. Now, I'm familiar with the fact that some of these caps like to whistle but does it make sense that the whistling really took off after installing the FI2000? Could this be a result of a vacuum hose pinched or not put back in place properly? I was pretty sure I was careful with the hoses but it's possible I missed one. How many hoses do I need to be aware off when lifting and putting back down the gas tank? A second partly-related question about the FI2000R. I'm running factory setting of 3-5-0. I love smoothness I get going up through the gears but notice a little hesitation off the mark or idle. I am running stock pipes/air. Which dial should i manipulate if at all? Thanks again. Nomad gas caps always whistle, they're known for it. Perhaps yours was stuck and the warm weather caused the valve to free itself. You can cure the whistling if you want to. Go to Gadgets Fixit site and there is an article on how to cure it.

There are 2 vents. On my 05 they are both on the right side of the tank (rear brake side). One near the front and one near the rear. The one near the battery that you describe is the rear one coming off the tank.

Oh this is tragic, what it means is you should give the bike to ME
![]() That sound is yer best friend, it means the tank is venting normally. A lot of guys over ride that, but i won't since it is just the buzzing of a little reed valve in the cap, telling you it is venting under the hot sun, probably with a hot engine under it. The tubing running down to nothing is correct. You may shorten it if it bothers you, but do not plug it up with something. It will dump excess fuel if you over fill as it should. There is a sort of like tubing at the ft right seated, which is a water drain for the well just outside the cap. If that drain were not there, you would get caught wetting yer pants with rain water! Oh my! ![]() If you live in a weed land capitol like me out heya in the woods of New Hampsta, once a year or so I drip oil down the outside cap hole and with highly regulated air I blow out any grubby varmint pine needles hemplock needles and bugs. If you had a Cali bike then no vents would go to the outside air, and at the rear there would be a red and a blue tubing. With out looking in the book I forget which is which. One goes to the carbon cansiter and the other comes back from it. There are a few more tubings related, but you don't have them.

I wanted to treat this in a separte post. I run the TFI another type of the same thing. Cj is the best bet to talk with for this.
'A second partly-related question about the FI2000R. I'm running factory setting of 3-5-0. I love smoothness I get going up through the gears but notice a little hesitation off the mark or idle. I am running stock pipes/air. Which dial should i manipulate if at all?" But if i were you I would set all pots to 0, then set pot 1 alone. The Cobra setting you made is for a bike with more open air and more open exhaust. The end result will to be adjust to best idle RMP with pot 1 alone, which is likey to be a smaller clock value than 3. These pots are rather sensitive, and so it may not be much. The lag is probably due to being overly rich at full warm and the engine is gagging slughtly from this condition. I don't care who makes what, these book settings are just a place to start, they are not written in stone. Once you find best RPM for pot 1 then you can set pot 2 to where ever the book says, but i wouldn't. I would go to a rural place where the cops won't bust you for speeding, and set pot 3 to '3' and romp down the road as if all the demons in hell were after you for 1/4 mile marked. After a few runs to know the feel set the pot to 4 and repeat. Is this better? If so then set the pot to 5 and repeat. Is this better? If so set that pot to 6 and repeat. Is this better? Untill you find it isn't better and it is worse. A helper is nice here as they can stand and watch at either the first to 2nd shift point or at the 2nd to 3rd shift point and see if there is black smoke. I mean stand at the road side, not chase you. Side Note: I am the typo king, around heya', and to make matters worse I type in Yankee Hick. Get used to it, ever body else has ![]()

Lots of good information here. Thank you all for your input.
I'm gonna chaulk the whistle up to the warmer weather and keep an eye on it. Macmac thanks for the input on the cobra. There are a lot of rural roads around here and I'll definitely try your advice. |

It has already been covered but I was going to say with cool weather it doesn't whistle. Once the temperature heats up you will notice the whistle. Installing the fuel modulator had no effect on the whistle. After installing the weather obviously warmed up and that is the culprit of the whistle. Nothing to worry about. Unless the vent is stopped up they all whistle.

A reason I am always re-assured hearing that whisel is the valve works two ways. If the valve gets clogged you will have a real bad time opening the filler cap for 1, and can over draw a tank vacuum to the point the pump can't pump. The result is running out of gas till you pry the cap open, with a lot of gas still in the tank.
