Car tires

Hey Todd, why don't you pin a car tire thread up so that we all know where to go for car tire info? AND DON'T CALL IT THE DARK SIDE!! ;)

So, this car tire business is more complicated than I thought.

The tire sizing going by ratios isn't real helpful.

You can get a 175/55R/16 that is 23.5 inches in diameter, 7.1 inches wide, and turns 882 times per mile.

185/55R/16 that is 24.2, 7.6, and 863

195/50R/16 that is 23.7, 8.2 and 886

195/55R/16 that is 24.4, 8, and 852

195/80R/16 that is 28.2, 8, and 739 revolutions per mile

And that's just the few that I checked!

Then you can check grip, and get an AA rating on an all season tire, and only an A on a summer tire, so wouldn't you go with an all season with more grip? Etc. Etc.

How did you guys ever come to a decision on what was a good trade off, and what did you end up getting?

Talk to those with riding styles similar to yours. And see what works for them. Put the tallest tire on that will fit to correct the speedo error. Too short and you'll be dragging leaving the driveway.

Then it's like asking,do you like coke or pepsi?

Hey anyone with a riding style similar to mine?

Do you know what the diameter of the stock tire is just for comparison?

I wouldn't run a car tire as there's not enough Historical data to substantiate such a risky endeavor ;)

P.S. A 195/80-16 will touch the angle brace in the front right corner of the swingarm. The brace will require having a notch cut out to accommodate this size.

Just make sure you legs are long enough first. You wouldn't want to fix the speedo but not reach the pavement when you stop.

No one but no one rides in the style Dan does... No one living that is.

Dan the 195/60/ R16 is close to stock height, just about the very same. I run that as Dunlop Sp 5000. I like it alot, but it won't change speedo error. I don't care about speedo error.

I think BD's tire comes close to curing speedo error, but I am not sure. Better ask him.

So the 195/80 is 28.2, so going as tall as you can, but staying under 28.2 would get you the best ground clearance (I've got long legs) for cornering, and lowest engine rev's for a given speed right.

Anything wrong with that logic, or am I missing anything?

That was pretty much my reasoning when I switched to the current tire.
For me 185/75/16 is the tallest that could fit. I had to do some grinding on the swingarm.

But on a 1600 it should fit with no mods.

What tire is it, and where did you get it?

Is it the same tire that you would get if you were doing it again?

Dan, Go to Tireseasy.com. You should be able to get the Dunlop SP5000 Sport 195/60-16 for right at $100 delivered or close to it. It's a good tire and I think it would fit your riding style. My tailpipe extensions sometimes do hit lightly when coming out of a parking lot with a high curb riding 2 up. No big deal though. Use the attached link to get dimensions on different sized tires.
