Installed trailer hitch from Chuckster - fit great. Built my trailer from Piggybacker - looks great. Now I just have to wire it.

I have a Vulcan Nomad 1600. I have located the wiring to splice into for trailer lights. I have 5 wires on the bike. Trailer wiring is 4 wires. I have purchased a Hopkins tail light converter #46155. Has anyone used this particular converter in the same situation I am in? Is there a potential to do electrical damage to my bike by using this or do I just go ahead and hook it up and go on?

I bet you guys will be glad when I get this thing hooked up and I am through! Your help is greatly appreciated.

Bull

Sorry but wiring is a weakness of mine. Now house wiring is no problem but automotive and motorcycle and I'm like a newborn. I am sure some of the other guys will be able to help you.

Bull, My first Hoppy was the 46255 powered converter. It shorted out while traveling in an extreme deluge in Oklahoma last year on the way back from the National Rally in Custer. I sent it back to Hopkins and they sent me a replacement which is shown in the link below. It is a "short proof" version of the 46255. It can be mounted anywhere on the bike, wet or dry. I mounted it below my coolant overflow tank behind the right side cover. It has a pigtail about 3' long which gives you the option of mounting it hidden where the 46255 needs to be mounted on the hitch where it will be spashed riding on a wet road. I have a thread somewhere on here that illustrates how I mounted the short proof model. If I can find it, I'll post it for you.
PS: The powered converters like this are better because they receive power directly from the battery diminishing the chance of shorting out your bike wiring should a problem develop on your trailer wiring.

Mitch

Lots of us have used the Hoppy 46255 converter to adapt Nomad wiring to a 4 wire trailer. It works fine. I am not familiar with the 46155, however.

My 46255 was defective according to Hopkins. It was one out of a batch that was molded poorly allowing moisture to get inside. I would have replaced it with the same model but Hopkins sent me the short proof model instead. I prefer it ove the 46255 because on the hitch the only thing showing is the plug with a rubber cap over it. The module fits neatly in the space beneath the overflow tank. My dumb luck got me a 46255 that was defective.
