Removing Wheel Weights for Dyna Beads

How difficult is it to remove the weights on a 2008 Nomad? Any tips/instructions would be appreciated. I'd like to do this before the season starts. I don't need new tires, I just like the idea of not having weights on the wheels.

I had Dyna Beads in my '99 Intruder 1500 and it rode like glass. When I had new tires put on that bike, I removed the wheels myself and took them to the place that installed the tires. It was such a fiasco and this was a very reputable shop! They installed the tires backwards, which I caught before leaving the shop and they told me to come back. When I did, one tire was still backwards, which they corrected while I waited.

After all that, I never noticed that they didn't balance the wheels and I installed them. On the first ride, I definitely noticed. So, I tried Dyna Beads rather than removing the wheels again, and they worked fantastic.

I'm assuming they are self-adhesive weights? Just pry them off and use rubbing alcohol to remove any adhesive residue. BTW, you should NOT use wheel weights and Dynabeads together. Get those weights off of there.

If you have the clip on weights that are put on with a hammer you can carefully pry them off with pliers as well. They come off easy but be gentle so you dont mark the rim.

Yes, I'm removing the existing weights since they are not needed with the beads.

The weights are clipped to the edge of the wheel and I'm concerned about damaging the wheel because I can't see how the piece that is between the tire and rim attaches.

I believe you can use the Dyna Beads with wheel weights - any beads not needed to balance will distribute equally in the tire. I just don't want the weights clipped to the wheel because the longer I leave them, the worse the wheel will look when I get them off.

Thanks for the heads-up! I think I'll order this when I order the beads:

it is best to remove the weights when using the beads.. There is inexpensive wheel weight pliers that grab a hole in the spring clip. This is a combo tool with a hammer head, and probably a curled grip flared some to pop off hub caps. Pretty much no such thang any more as hub caps. Any kind of NAPA, VIP, O'Reilies etc would have this tool for under 10 buck probably.

Thanks Mac. I am DEFINITELY removing the weights, which is the main reason for my post. I will post the results of my experience with the weight removal tool when I try it out - probably in a week.

The Dyna Beads worked extremely well with my Metz 880s on the Intruder 1500 without wheel weights. No sense screwing around with success.

I'm not here to argue, but if I recall, it states to not use wheel weights when using Dynabeads right on their website.

If you have the clip on weights, they are really easy to remove. Just pry them gently so you don't damage the rim, but the installer may have already done that for you.

I looked at my weights the other day and they clamp on. Fit just under the rim. Just use pliers and be careful when you pull them off.

HA! Good point! The idiot who installed the windshield cross-threaded 2 of the bolts. Found that out this winter when I tried to remove it to permanently remove the sub-shield. Had to destroy the bolts to get them out.

Yep, you're right about the weights for motorcycles - they definitely recommend removing them. From their site: "Many of our car and SUV customers have found that the addition of 2 - 3 ounces per tire while retaining their wheel weights makes the vehicle ride much smoother than before, increases tire mileage, and eliminates most future balancing requirements."

I worked as a "tire buster" at a tire store many moons ago. We would pound those weights on with a mallet, so the damage may have already been done. I've never had clip-on weights on my Nomad wheels, they always used the self-adhesive type.

Cj is correct the wheel weights should be off to use beads. A bit of masking tape will prevent new marks....

Yikes! Hopefully any damage is not too bad. The beads and the weight removal tool arrived Saturday and I'm hoping to get started tonight. Getting the beads through the valves in my Intruder 1500 was pretty easy, but the Nomad valves are angled.
