I rode my Nomad to work this morning. The temperature in my neighborhood was 36 degrees. I decided to try the insulated ski pants I bought awhile ago. 36 degrees is awful chilly when you're wearing khakis like I wear to work, so these insulated pants were just the ticket. They have full side zippers, like my chaps, and a nylon gaiter on the inside of the leg that seals off the cold wind. I bought these at Sports Authority on sale for like $35.
Of course, I won't need them on the ride home today. Temps will be in the upper 70's! ![]()

Is a gaiter related to a garter?

I woke up this morning and it was 7 degrees. I thought about riding the bike, but the 14" of snow at the end of the drive way talked me out of it.

I spend about half my riding season wearing snowmobile pants. Once it starts dipping into the 40's I put them on. They make a huge difference in my riding comfort, especially coming home at night. Freezing your kneecaps is no picnic after youve done it a few times.

Hey, you da man...I am really craving a ride, but just not gonna do it "today" even though I have plenty of the right gear and even new hippo hands, about which I have not decided will be ok or not, as I havne't used them except once or twice on cold rides...

I bought the Walls bib insulated overalls at wally world in black. Full leg zippers. fully insulated including the bib and works very well. Durable canvas if you hit which will abrade alot slower than nylon.

I hear ya. mornings are chilly. The first five miles I drop 1000' and the next 6 miles are in the Valley where it's about 5 degrees warmer. Legs still get cold. But the ride home makes it worth it.

Gee CJ... around here, when it gets to the mid-30's... we have a picnic in our shorts! ;)
![]() -10 degrees here tonight. We've yet to hit the -20's yet, but it is coming soon. Metal starts breaking around here at those temps.

I was going to say 36 is not that cool until I did the conversion to metric (temps are the one thing I need in metric)....not very often I venture out when it is that cool on the bike :).... Nice you have the right clothes for it!
Of course the -18F temps and 5" of snow here more or less limit my options....but at least it is not -32F anymore....

Yeah, I know. ![]() CJ, is there always that big of a temp change out there this time of year?[/quote:nfokwpam] It's not unusual. Even in summer, the desert cools off at night. But in the Phoenix metro area, there is square mile after square mile of concrete, asphalt, stucco, and tile roofs. Those things heat up during the day and radiate the heat at night, so in summer the low temp is typically around 90 degrees. It stays well over 100 degrees hours after the sun goes down. In the summer, there may only be a 15-20 degree temperature differential between the coolest part of the day, which is just before sunrise and the hottest part of the day, around 4:00 PM. Since the days are shorter in the winter and we are farther from the sun, all the man-made surfaces don't get as hot and things start cooling down as soon as the sun goes down. So you guys who are snowed in now can all gloat this summer when I am riding to work at 6:30 AM and it's already warmer than the high temperatures many of you will see all day.
