As those in Antlers know, I lost 4th gear on the trip and there was plenty of grinding going on with the other gears. Well, I called the dealership today and here is what they told me:

The cases are damaged. Behind the left cover there is a shaft that has shift stars on it. The bearing that goes from inside out touches the tabs on the star. Well, the tabs are broken and the cases are damaged.

The service manager stopped all work and they are contacting the warranty company to find out just what they are going to do. It may be that they rebuild the transmission or engine, depending on the amount of damage, or, I'm thinking, they may consider a new engine. Either way, the first thing they asked was if I had an extended warranty. So...I'm without my baby until the warranty company decides what to do.

This sucks!!!

It may take longer than you like but I think it will work out in your favor Jeff. Wow, just think if you get a new engine! You will have your Nomad for a long time to come.

Hope everything works out well. I know I would already be having withdrawals just knowing it will be awhile before I would be riding again. Maybe the weather will be cold and raining for awhile so you really won't be missing so much. Oh yeah, your in Texas, SORRY!
Best wishes for a speedy repair!

You never said whether or not you had an extended warranty? Do you?

How many miles on the bike there Bigfoot? Haven't heard of this happening and wondering as to the cause.

I did get the extendeds warranty, so that helps. I have 41k on her and this does appear to be a unique situation. As soon as I get more info, I will pass it along.

Well, I got the call from the dealership and everything is covered by the warranty! . The total damages would have been $3700 if I had to pay for everything. Here is a small part of what is being replaced: set of cases, shift cam, shift fork, new seals, 3 gears and a multitude of other lesser parts, but they do add up. I will be having them install a new set of rings. So, I get a new engine and many great miles to come!

When you get it back try to not tear it up again if you would put your baffles back in so you have some back pressure maybe it won't tear up. ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Glad to hear you'll soon be back on the road. And on someone else's dime!

Glad to hear the warranty is covering it all and that you'll be back riding soon. Be gentle with that revirginized tranny. . .

Glad to read that things are going your way. I don't suppose they had any idea of what caused the problem. Are you installing new cam chains also?

Still not on the road yet. I am not expecting a quick fix since they have so many parts to get in and then start the work. Watchman, not sure if they are installing new cam chains. The svc mgr said there was a sizeable number of parts, so I am not sure about the cam chains. As for riding her gently, I will contine to treat her gently. Hopefully the parts hold up. I will keep you updated.

Thats great news Jeff, the extended warranty really seems to have paid off in your case. If you plan on keeping the bike for a lot more miles Id probably install new timing chains since everything is already apart.
