What Radio set up do you have
What stereo/radio set up do you have and how do you like it? I'm wanting to put tunes on the bike without the fairing (recently decided to scratch the fairing idea & just go with tunes) so I'm looking for ideas, thoughts, and opinions on what are good/bad ways to do this. I'm looking at the Shark 250w set up and thinking about adding an ipod in there also. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't have any info to offer but I'll be paying attention to this thread because I'm toying with the idea of a Garmin Zumo 550 for the GPS/MP3/FM radio (hoping I can plug a Sat radio into it). It's wireless (Bluetooth) and I already have the Scala Rider Teamset that'll communicate with it.

I tried everything that I could think of without having the fairing and it souned ok but could hardley hear it over 60 mph so I bit the bullet and put the fairing with 4 135 watt polk audio speakers with a high powered alpine deck and man it is killer it is clear as a bell at 100mph I wish I would have done this from the begging it would have saved me a ton of time and $$$$ You can try and save a little $$ but remember you get what you pay for.

I have a 30GB Zune MP3 player I mount to my handlebars with a RAM mount. Then I use earbuds or helmet speakers to listen to the tunes. I have a male/female headphone extension cable I ran under my tank and the female end comes out at the rear of the tank/front of the seat. I just plug my listening devices into that. Works very well.
I decided not to mess around with the little amplifiers and the handlebar mounted speakers. I plan to invest in a fairing next year with a decent stereo system in it.

I agree with the handle bar speakers, mine are only 100watt and it sucks after 60mph or so, but under that its pretty nice, so yes I will get a fairing soon also as soon as money will alot it.

I have the Kuryakyn handlebar speakers with a sansa clip mp3 player.Sounds pretty good up to 60-70 mph.Wind noise is louder than music on my bike.Guess I need to work on qiueting it down.

Even on my Goldwing, I used earbuds because you had to turn up the radio so loud to hear it and the quality of the sound sucked...no bass. I have an iRiver MP3 player mounted on my bars with a Ram mount using a modified camera mount attachment. iRiver actually had a waterproof case for the model I have and I bolted that to the camera attachment. I have an extension cable running under the tank and coming out on the left front of the seat. I run my earbud cable inside my jacket so it doesn't blow around. The volume you need to hear is way less with the ear buds which is better on your hearing plus they block some of the wind noise too.

I have handlebar speakers driven by a 250w amp .. but I also use an in helmet headset.
I use a splitter out of an xm radio or mp3 .. splits output to the headset and to the amp/speakers. Music to the headset and through the speakers. Gives me the higher tones through the headset (not amplified so it's not to loud) and the low tones through the speakers. The amp has a remote control (off-on-volume-mute-input source) - that I mounted close to the left hand grip Works pretty good at all speeds. |

I have a J&M Corp CB combo. I can do CB, talk with my wife (under 60 mph) and listen to an auxilliary playback device (my Blackberry usually). I mounted speakers/mic in my full-face helmet and the 3/4 has a boom mic. I didn't feel like adapting my half-helmet.
I'm not sure I would do the CB again. I got it because of my commute. I thought the truckers would have a lot better idea of traffic conditions than the local radio, but many of them get stuck in the stop-and-go also.

I made a homemade system with 2 spotlight housings and 2 4" speakers mounted on the handlebars.I found an amp on ebay and put it in a windshield bag .I mounted a mp3 player and loaded it with music and it also receives FM radio .I spent around $100 to put it together.I used it on some trips and never had a problem. The picture below shows the setup.

I also have the J&M CB with headset mounted in my full face helmet. I have an XM satelite radio plumbed in and love it. The J&M also has a weather radio that has come in handy once or twice. The tone quality is awesome. The XM has been a lifesaver on the road. I can listen to whatever I want with the touch of a couple of buttons. very nice.

I have a J & M also, with my iPod hooked up to it. I have to get a mount for the iPod though, otherwise it is luck of the draw as to what I listen to.

Premiux fairing - Pioneer Deck (200Watt) Kenwood 6.5" speakers front and in rear Dragonfly Speaker pods - Sirius Radio into FM. Was contemplating adding tweeters to the fairing like the Hogtunes setup, just too lazy for now. If it get ugly out I listen thru the Scala Rider Q2 headsets.

I've looked into getting tunes for some time now, but got side tracked on other mods / upgrades... my two cents, I sometimes like to ride (scary) with no helmet, thereby rendering earbuds/helmet speakers non option. Also I'm not a fan of the annoying cable flopping around between me and the wife, and always plugging and unplugging. Certainly the HD fairing option is supreme, so the middle of the road seems to be some kind of handlebar mounted speakers / amp... also I haven't really seen an MP3 player with large buttons on it to operate with gloves on... sometime function over form is the rule. ( a large buttoned with Mute MP3 player for motorcycles would be great). Damm, now I need to get a Fairing, this Nomad is getting to be as bad as owning a Boat.
