In for paint - now with photos!

I dropped my new tourpak off at Roe's Custom Paint in downtown Chandler for paint this morning. He said he would try to have it ready this Friday and he quoted me a price of $180, which includes fixing my boo-boo with the drill bit. That seems really reasonable, considering one place quoted me as much as $350-$400 to do the work.

I'll post pictures of the finished product after I get it back.

That first quote does seem rather high considering that I was quoted $500.00 to paint my whole bike (if I stripped the tins off and brought them in).

In fairness, this was a phone quote. Maybe they were thinking they would have to strip the hardware off and reassemble it after paint, I'm not sure. It seems excessively high so I'm thinking they quoted a lot of labor for some reason. It's not like they are some high-end shop, so I wasn't paying for a reputation.

I just called a few places and gave them all the same information. I chose this shop because they are somewhat convenient to both home and work for me and I liked the price they quoted.

Painting can be high. I got several quotes to paint my batwing and lower fairings and it was pretty high. Luckily I found someone here at work that was a paint booth and does that kind of work on the side. We went and got the paint. HD Vivid black is almost a perfect match for my ebony black Nomad. He was very reasonable.

Scott,
I'm confused. Didn't you already have a tourpak on your bike?

That sounds like a very reasonable price for paint, I was quoted $500.00 to repaint the Tour Pak to get rid of a couple small scratches. I paid $500.00 to repair a small crack and repaint the fairing. Two shops quoted around @2200.00 to repaint the bike, and thats me handing them the parts.
He claimed the cost of the paint is why the price was so high.

Yes sir, I sure did. I had a Mutazu trunk and somewhere on the Custer trip I decided I needed a bigger trunk, so I ordered a Scootworks Supertrunk III when I got back home.

Yeah, we have had storms every night for the past 4 nights. Not only can we use the rain, it cools things down a little.

It is not un-common for 1/2 pint of good paint to be 65 bucks. That is just the paint in the can, a 1 pt can.

The box will have to be sanded to take paint. If the paint is BC CC paint it will be a little more.

If a guy is very very good he can sand and wet sand out to fair, and the box is probably close to fair as is. If he finds any flaw he can't hide in CC which can hide things, he will have to fix it.

A single 3-M sanding disk these days is right out of sight!

Paint is far from cheap these days and is full of isocryinates... ( don't hang around to watch unless you wear a really really good resperator...) Like about 100 bucks worth of tool to just suck air. Look up that word.....

I was thinking that I'd like to add a bumper rail around the trunk to protect it from dings, etc. Has anyone added one of these to a Scootworks (or other) trunk and a Wompus rack?

Sometimes the more room you have the more stuff you carry that you really didn't need in the first place. Guess size does matter.
