Hi Duneseven,

Sounds like a fun trip. If you guys want to keep off of the interstates as much as possible and aren't in a pinch for time there are lots of scenic side-routes out in Eastern and Central Oregon.

If you are coming into Oregon through Ontario I would consider coming west on highway 26 to Prineville. If you are coming in through Enterprise in the NE part of the state, (the Wallowa mtns are gorgeous), you could take hwy 82 to Lagrande, then after a short jog north on I-84 take 244 to Ukiah where you connect with hwy 395. Take that south to Mt Vernon where you take 26 west.

Possible side-trips could be hwy 19 through the John Day Fossil Beds Nat'l Monument off hwy 26 between Dayville and Mitchell. Also the Cascade Lakes Highway out of Bend. These are two of my favorite local day-trips.

Whichever way you go I know that you will see some fantastic scenery the whole trip.

Oh, and the worlds biggest ball of string is located in Darwin, Minnesota. (Gotta love that Google!)

Enjoy and stay safe!

Best regards,

Bob

Last year we rode due east out of Coos Bay along the Umpqua River, then south to Crater Lake. Don't know if it works for your misdirection but good fun on ya's!

I tried to go up there in March in my truck but decided to turn around when the snowplows did.

Duneseven,

Check wind speed ahead of time on I-84 along the Columbia River in the afternoon....the wind can kick up pretty good.

I would take Hwy 7 out of Baker City to Hwy 26 then head to the Cascade mountains to escape the heat (assuming you are going in the next 60 days) take roads in Cascades to Crater Lake.

When are you going???

P.S. Pine Street Tavern in Bend is a great place to eat. Try to eat on the back patio if possible.

Cultus Lake is pretty cool with a little hole in the wall restaurant at the "lodge" (pretty rustic). But good burgers and shakes and relaxing atmosphere.

Have a great time...if you swing in to the Portland area let me know and I will meet up you. Don't worry I am not a stalker like Netnorske.

I just came back from a trip that included Crater Lake.

Unfortunately due to time contraints we had to stick to the freeways a lot - we started the day in Portland, ran our along the north side of Columbia River to Hood River, then down around MT Hood, then down the 97 thru Bend and eventually into Crater Lake NP. We left the park out to the south west and camped near Medford for the night, arriving well after dark.

I'm sure people can offer you a better route than mine. Just two things I will say...

1. The mosquitoes at Crater Lake were the largest I've seen anywhere in the world (when you smacked at them in the air, you could feel the impact on your palm !)

2. Get gas where you can... you'll need to check your route, but we almost ran out of gas. There is none in the NP. Coming from the north, thru the park and out to the the south west, the nearest gas station closed at about 6pm I think (at Prospect... we were there about 730pm as I recall). The next gas station was closing at 8pm and we made it there at 7:52... with 157 miles on the tank on my Nomad. I had a gas can with me, but it was empty :(" title="" border="0"/> I'd been expecting to get gas at the closer place so didn't think I'd need the can. From the north national park entry down to Prospect was about 50 miles, and another 7 miles to the gas station that stays open until 8pm (a few miles south of the town of Cascade Gorge, where Mill Creek Drive meets the 62)

The lake is gorgeous.

Brian
