The 58-year-old former Marine now finds himself under attack by his Dallas homeowners association for displaying seven decals on his vehicle supporting the Marine Corps.

HOA's everywhere are screwy Scoot... not just in Texas. Looks to me that the President of that HOA sent that letter and the other board members didn't know about it, which suggests the President has something personal against that guy displaying the stickers on his car.
How much you want to bet it'll get dropped now that it's been in the news media?

Something like this happens every so often here. In fact, a few years ago, there was a guy in Scottsdale fighting his HOA about flying a Marine Corps flag on his property.
HOAs, I'm convinced, are run for the most part by people who probably got picked on in junior high school and this is the way they get back at society for every perceived injustice they have ever had to deal with. Ask these a-holes where they think they would be without the US military. I'm sure to them the world would be a better place without Marines or GI's or Sailors or fighter pilots. Here I go again, getting all wound up! Next, I'll start hearing the voices...then after that, I accept no responsibility for what might happen next.

You're still in denial, CJ.......You must attend a "wound up" support group meeting and soon.
"Hi....my name is CactusJack and I'm a woundaholic". "Hi CactusJack".

if it wasn't the Marines or the military it would be something else, like the color of the shrubs, your car, or carpet. Some people are CFs.

Hey, hey, hey!! I'm the President of my HOA and we go out of our way not to be stupid about things. For example, we had a cop interested in buying a lot and building a house in our community. He was worried that we'd have a problem with his squad car being parked in the driveway. We made the very reasonable determination that a squad car was not a commercial vehicle and put in the record that we'd welcome him to our community. End result? He moved in and that same week he got promoted to detective, so now he drives an unmarked car. :-)

I would think a marked police vehicle would be somewhat welcome... as sort-of a crime deterent -- or speed deterent.

Before my wife and I moved to the house we have now, we lived for a short time in my brother and his wife's house, taking care of the place while they two lived and worked overseas. The whole point of my brother working overseas was to pay his house off and his student loans, which he managed to do in about three years time. After doing so, just about a year remained on his contract which would keep them away for a little longer.
During this time I received a letter from the HOA instructing me to remove the three dead trees that were on my property. I knew which trees they were referring to, but they weren't dead; rather the trees in question were just simply unattractive Japanese elms, which looked dead. I didn't plant them, they came with the property when my brother bought the place, so I filed the notice away and forgot about it. I received three more notices in as many months, the last of which stressing that if the HOA's instructions were not followed within thirty days, I would be fined, and the possibility of legal action was threatened. Thirty more days, and a knock at the door, and the HOA president, along with two or three other members, and I finally came face to face. Long story short, I was instructed to once more get rid of the trees, and pay the fine. If I did not comply, a lien would be placed on the house, and ultimately if I did not cooperate I could lose the house. I looked down the length of my nose at the president and the board members and said, "No you won't. First the trees aren't dead. Second, this house is owned free and clear. You're not placing a lien on sh*t, which means you aren't seizing the property either." Then, I slammed the door in their faces, and walked away. All of the harassment stopped at that point. End of story.

HOA's are like the Constitution and Bill of Rights, the original intent of the creation was to prevent obvious things that in reality shouldnt really need to be in print but for the purpose of protecting those things from those who would try to abuse an open system it had to be in print to protect it... as we have seen for a very long time now in our system, the original reasons can and will get redefined and perverted by those who feel they know what the writers really meant...... and have the power (or think they are empowered by their position) to try and impose their values on things.

What is a HOA's? I don't think we have that in New Hampshire. I know you can park a squad car in your drive way, and fly any flag you like.
People from away find they get shot at around here if they get to out of hand.

HOA = Homeowners Association. Many new sub-divisions have them. If you buy a house in one you have no choice but to join the association and pay the monthly dues. Susposedly, these due pay for the upkeep of the common areas. Heaven forbid if something major goes wrong with something like the pool or clubhouse. In that case every homeowner gets stuck with a special assessment to pay for it.
I will live in a cardboard box underneath an overpass before I will ever buy a house which is part of a HOA.
