What am I looking for??
Hi Guys...I have a 2003 1500.
I am going to remove my fuel tank and try to find my "extra" electrical connection so I can hook up a power outlet. My questions are...what will it look like? Will it have a white female connector attached to it? Will it be taped up? Any idea what color wire? Is there an easier "extra" connector I should be using? Thanks in advance. Greg

There should be a white wire with a blue tracer as (+) and a black wire with a yellow tracer as (-). There should be one pair in the head lamp bucket and another tied under the tank. Both come form the same 10 amp fuse in the fuse box.
If the power outlet is going to be handle bar mounted or mounted on the rear side of the windshield, you might want to use the lamp bucket wires, and pass your wirng into the lamp bucket. If the mounting is going to be on the frame then the pair under the tank may serve better. DO NOT run these wires to passing lamps or any heavy draw/loads, with out a relay. 10 amps is very close to many pairs of 55 watts passing lamp loads and if these wires run direct with no relay the ignition switch is likey to fry. That would take time, but for sure will leave you stuck on a ride somewhere at some point in time. You can run a lighter, a small map lamp, GPS, radio's on 10 amps all day long, and use this socket as a battery charger take off if you like, for Battery tenders, or Shumaker aito float chargers and a new type that beats sulfation with a pulse so I hear.. These chargers should be rated at 12 volt dc at no more than 1.5 amps. I personall hard wired a Shumaker lead which is std and comes with the tool to mt battery, but I could have rigged up a power lead to a socket is I wanted. If this is for a cell phine as well consider another powered socket in the tool bix side cover. I had 2 powered sockets on my 01. One mounted to a single bolt on the windscreen and the other in the tool box cover where the velcro strap is. When are you coming over for pancakes anyway? ![]()

On the 1500's the extra wires are located under the tank in the front LH side, near the rad cap. there is also another pair of the same colored wires under the seat on the LH frame member near the battery. On my 2002 there are no spare wires in the headlamp bucket.

I didn't get the tank entirely off -- didn't need to to route my wiring -- so didn't see any there. As far as under the seat... didn't see any spare there either.
Was no problem going direct... but I admit I was a bit confused when everyone kept telling me that wires should be in all three locations!!

They are just little bullet connecters on a short length of wire, and they are tucked in there, you may have to dig for them a bit, but I bet they are there.

What am I looking for??
My best excuse us I owned that bike 361 days, before some wacked out fool stole it.
I should have recalled better since I used both pairs to run powered sockets. One on the wind screen to run a volt meter and the other to charge my wife's cell. She still has that blasted phone too, but sine day 1 I have never been able to complete one single call ever... If I ever do get my hands on that thing again it is going meet Mister 3 Pound Sledge and Mister 198 Pound Stone Weight Anvil, then into the forge to see what that thing is really made of.. ![]() I wonder if there is a law I would be breaking smashin' that dammned junk.... probably.... ::)
