Tire/Wheel Removal

When the bike is lifted and the rear wheel is hanging free, do the pipes get in the way of pulling the rear axle....or does the axle actually drop below the pipes? I'm curious because I found a shop that will remove my old and mount my new tires very reasonably (under $100) if there are no major obstructions (ie: pipes). I will remove my bags prior to taking it there, but am curious about the pipes...thx.

You will need to drop the muffler on the left side (2 bolts) in order to slide out the axle.

Under $100 sounds reasonable, I figure its about 2 hours work in total to remove wheels, mount tires and reinstall. My guy charges me $20 per tire to install if I take in the wheels.

The problem is the book calls for the drive shaft to be inspected, and the swing arm bearings to be greased... getting the wheel off is about 1/2 way..

maybe if the rate of bad U joints wasn't near as many as there are, you could sort of skip it the first time 7,000 miles passes, and just risk totally mashed swing arm bearings since they don't get much of any grease at the factory.

How you guys can ride and ignor that U joint is something I can't understand.

My 01 had that bad U joint, and I know of more than several others... I was all about knowing that on my 06 which is fine.

But just like my 01 there was no grease to speak of in the swingarm bearings, and these both were rusty at the sp[acers, not to mention the seals act like thrust washers because some bean counter thinks he is an engineer.

If the service was done and you KNOW it was, then I am out of line, but if it wasn't then it is your LIFE you are gambling with.

The shop that mounted my new tire, serviced the drive shaft, and greased the swing arm bearings charged me for 3 hours labor. I was satisfied and now have peace of mind with the drive shaft and swingarm.

It's nice to know we can count on you when we need a little tough love....

! The mere thought of such disaster is enough to warrant a change of shorts! I will certainly spend the extra $$ to have those things checked while the wheels are off. Good advice as always....what would we do without you...???

If they charged you three hours do that job, I would say thats a good price. It probably took him at least every bit of that time if not more. While its not real hard to do yourself, it is a heavy dirty job.

I was able to see the tech going back together with it. Not the whole process, but the driveshaft was on the bench and the swingarm was being put back on. This shop has been around for 25 years and the owner and techs all have good reputations. There was another Nomad there with dry swingarm needle bearings, a leaking pinion seal, and a leaking bevel gear seal. I'm sure the bill for this '99 Nomad was steeper than mine. Oh, I got a quote from my dealer and he wanted double what Motorcycle Specialties charged me. I wouldn't feel nearly as confident as I do now had they done the job.
