Is it the clutch spring.
2003 Nomad FI with 25,000 miles.
When I accelerate hard from any gear, there is a time that the engine revs, but accelleration doesn't happen. It soudns like the clutch is slipping. Some have told me that this is part of the 1500 Nomad. I have also read that the clutch springs are not so good on the 1500 Nomad. Gadget recommends replacing with the meanstreak clutch spring. (If that is the issue). Suggestions?? Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Is it the clutch spring.
That's what it sounds like the problem is to me.

Thats what mine did at about 35,000 miles, install the meanstreak spring and Judges washers if you can get them, this eliminates the slip and gives you a nice positive feel. Gadgets page has great instructions for doing both. Its not that bad of a job to do yourself. I think it cost me about $50.00 for the spring and a gasket.

Thanks for the response. I still have the extended warrenty, but this is not typically covered from what I understand. Is there any thing you might suggest I can say to get it covered?

Go in when the dealership is full of customers. If they refuse warranty coverage then scream, yell, wave arms wildly while running in circles.

Warranty work is generally done by the new guy to see if he knows jack about anything. This holds true anywhere. If he don't fix it, he has a do-over. I say do your own work and fondle your bike some. Then you know what makes it tick. Same for the Ol'lady.

Ask them if they will install a Meanstreak spring for you, it may be the replacement spring anyways.

They are going to install the Meanstreak spring and the extra ring for pressure.

the Judges washers create a problem (as I can best understand it) with intentional clutch slip to prevent rear tire lock (hop) in the event of missed shifting. The extra ring (13280A) they are putting in will still allow a little slippage but not near as much with stock set up. This is from gadget, which seems to be pretty concise.
In my case, it was just the spring. The clutch plates were ok. The warrenty would NOT cover the plates. Continuing to ride with the spring gone, will eventually damage the plates. |

Question, Do chain drive bikes have a slip clutch? or is it just shaft drive?
