Final Drive Oil
I picked up a quart squeeze bottle of Royal Purple 75w-90 synthetic gear oil this afternoon. Does anyone use this in their final drive? This will be the first synthetic oil in the gear case with 7,600 miles rolled up. It was changed by the dealer at the first service 600 miles. My plans are to change the final drive oil at every other oil change.

Final Drive Oil
I used Valvoline DuraBlend 80W-90 when I did my 600 mile service. It works fine, but holy sh*t does that stuff stink. I changed my oil using Mobil-1 Turbo Diesel Full Syn and that stuff smelled good, like yeasty bread, but this stuff stunk to the high heavens.

Final Drive Oil
Terrebonne,
I use Royal Purple also for the final drive oil, but I use 75w-140 syn. Change it out every other time I change my oil and oil filter. Just remember when changing to leave your Nomad leaning on the kick-stand for best results.

Final Drive Oil
I think you'll find changing the final drive oil every second oil change a bit of over kill. The final drive unit is a closed, constant mesh gear system. It only does one thing. So once the new oil is in ... It will last a very long time. I change mine every spring as part of my tune up and general once over of the entire bike. Done it this way for over twelve years. (8 yrs. 1400 Intruder, 4 yrs. Nomad) The initial change at the 600 mile mark (if I remember) is very important, But depending on your yearly mileage, once a year is all the changing you'll probably need.

Final Drive Oil
If the Royal Purple is rated as a GL5 or GL6 it is fine to use.

Final Drive Oil
I had to laugh, I just changed final drive oil a little while ago and said the same thing, that stuff really does stink! Get a couple drops on your clothes or coat and it really stays with you!
