Gas Smell
Hi Guys,
I have installed some Cobra True Duals as well as a new K&N air filter in place of the stock air filter. Seems now that I done those 2 things I am smelling a gas fume smell as I am running down the road and my mpg's has gone down a couple of miles. Is there something going on and is my bike running richer now since I have done this? Didn't think about anything changing but it has. Is there something I need to do with these 2 things? Bike runs fine but just didn't know. Anything that would help would be appreciated. Thanks Butch Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Hi,
Do you have an aftermarket fuel processor ? Have you adjusted it to suit the changes ? Neither of the changes you made should result in you smelling gas. |

No I don't. Thats why I thought it odd that now I can smell the gas fumes when I throttle up down the road. I know everyone says that these Nomads are lean from the factory but I thought that maybe mine wasn't as lean as some are and just the new filter and pipes without the bladder "might" have opened it up a little thus resulting in a little more than needed fuel trying to be burned. Could be way off on that but I just thought it could be possible.

Is the bike new to you? Is it carbed or FI? Have you examined the fuel tank cap? Is the tank being overfilled with fuel? Check the cap gasket and don't fill pass the bottom of the neck on a carbed bike. Keep the fuel about 1/2 way down the neck or so on an FI bike. The only other time I can smell fuel is when I get distracted and leave the cap unlocked.

I've owned the bike for over 3 years now and just now changed out those 2 things so I thought it odd that now I am smelling the fumes as well as the mileage dropping down a couple mpg's. It's an 06 so its FI. Never had any trouble with it and still don't just those couple things going on now after the changes. I'm still riding it and will continue as it runs and rides very well.

If you over oil the K&N it will restrict the air flow causing it to run rich till the oil clears off

I'm not sure just a filter swap to a K&N with no box mod is enough to throw it off real bad

Sorry, I misread, I thought it was an intake mod, I see its just a filter change,

Nah, I just took the filter out of the bag in the box and installed it in place of the stocker. It said it was pre oiled and ready to go.

I would make sure all the fuel tank vent hoses are clear and not kinked or plugged up.
It is getting hot now and that fuel vapor venting from the tank will come out around the cap if it can't get down the hose and vent out under the bike if it comes out around the cap it's headed up your chest and across your face

Have you cleaned the throttle body out lately with a toothbrush. A stronger fuel smell and poor mileage as well as a poor idle are the three main things I notice when its time to clean it thoroughly.

This makes no sence. The engine has to be running leaner than it was. I am surprized it doesn't ping hard too.
With the engine warmed up well rev it some and have a helper look for black smoke out the pipes. Maybe you smell exhaust on decell? I would agree to see the throttle body has been cleaned well too. Really you should consider a fuel modual.
