Will they Get Paid Any Way

In 1995 the Federal Government shut down for 3 full weeks. 800,000 Federal employees who were deemed "not essential" did not work. All 800,000 got paid - late but they got paid. Soooo, it cost billions to pay folks not to work.

Will it happy again?

I agree with Tom. Most of them are lazy bums and don't do a days work anyway. How do I know? I was in the military for 20 years and worked side by side with them. You could have an emergency and need something done. If it was their break time, they took their break. I worked at NSA at Fort Meade, MD and watched the workers file in a lot of times. 90% of them had books and magazines to while away their time at work. I shouldn't have said work. They were there to get their time in and get paid big bucks.

That is the way it is at a lot of places. I worked for Siemens for almost 10 years before retiring. That place was one of the worst I have seen. People would stand around and talk for 30 minutes or longer at a time. No one said or did anything to them. The manager was doing a walk through one day. I told him if breathing was an automatic process a lot of the people there would die. He said, why? I said because most of these people are too lazy to breathe.

Question of the day; Why do we even have "non-essential" employees? Just sayin'..........

A lot of places are no different, and it seems the higher up you are the better the pay and the less you do. Ideally a politician has the best occupation when compared to their payscale

If they shut down, they will lay them off. They will get paid later for not working. The work load will pile up and they will be allowed overtime to get caught up. This is going to cost us another small fortune.

The politicians are playing a game with our ability to pay more taxes. They say they want to cut taxes, but they speak with the forked tongue. If they were concerned about this country, we wouldn't be in this mess. They are sticking to party lines. And now we have the influence of the Tea party. Good or bad, who knows. Boehner and Reid should shut the f@#k up. Lets put this great country back on its feet.

One language, spoken and written. Don't understand it? Can't read it? Tuff sh*t!

Want a job? Learn to speak and read english!

Want a hand out from the gov't? Tuff sh*t!

Congress can't spend any more money for new things, until they pay down on something to create the funds needed for the new expenditures.

No more sending money to other countries!

They have people in their countries that could give more to save their own country!

OK, take your best shots. I'm going to go put my armor on.

You have to be in the private industry to be furloughed to save money.... and not get paid AND not qualify for unemployment....... been there a few times over the last 30 years.

Gov workers and unions (for the most part) dont know about that pain and dont understand it..... and surely will be picking about it.

Question of the day; Why do we even have "non-essential" employees? Just sayin'..........

Bud - that is a good question but the answer is complex, from my point of view

Before going further, I am a retired Federal Employee (FE) and I was classified as "essential"

We have "non-essential" employees in many types of business operations, both pvt and govt. These employee are not needed for very short term operations. But, they are needed to support the the mission of their "employer'' (be it pvt or govt).

Example - In the short run - GM, Ford or Alcoa could still produce cars, turks or metal while laying off 1,000s of "support" folks like R&D folks, HR folks, Payroll folks, House Cleaning folks, etc. But, in the long run they would shut down with out those "non-essentials"

A possible Govt shut down is viewed as a short term event. FBI Agents, who are "essential", do not need in the short run many types of "support" folks. Same for wildland fire fighters etc, etc.

To me the real question is not if the individual employee is "essential" or non-essential" but rather is the govt. function itself really needed. And, then if it is needed, can it be done by pvt enterprise. (I have used the example of TVA in the past - replace it with Duke Power).

"Mission creep" is a real problem in many Federal agencies. For example, the National Park Service spends millions of dollars each year on projects and employees that have nothing to do with supporting, running or helping National Park Units. In the Servcie they are called "out house" programs and are a prime exaple of "mission creep".

I believe the Federal Government is ripe with programs and functions that are the results of "mission" creep and/or that that could be done by pvt enterprise (TVA). I am 1000000% for getting rid of those. But, I do recognize that those fictions that are legitimate (in my book) need to be supported by "no-essentials"

I don't normally comment on political threads but I'll keep it short on this one. If the paychecks stopped for these overpaid politicians, I can guarantee that the government would not shut down, period. They will get paid no matter how long or short the shutdown duration is. What do they have to lose? If they are voted out in the next election, they will continue getting paid for the rest of their lives. And notice, most of them live to a ripe old age. They should have to save for their retirements just like the rest of us. If I don't pile up as much as I can in my 401k, I'll have to depend on SS which is nearly bankrupt already. They win and we lose.
