Ron, have you had any luck in your search for a V Star? Sorry to hear you want to trade your Nomad. Looks like you really had it fixed up.

To be honest I don't know what I want to do...I love the ride on the Nomad but I was more comfortable on the v star. I keep saying it's the weight but the reality is I could reach the ground better, and was more comfortable in the saddle. Kinda crazy too after all the cash I put in this bike, and fixed it up almost exactly the way I want it, to dump it so soon especially for a cheaper bike. The other side is I had 2 people seriously contact me about trading...1 had a vulcan 900 and one has an 02 v star tha is worth about half what the Nomad is...a couple people asked what I'd sell it for and I uess they didn't like the price I gave them. I think I'm probably going to keep it, put some miles on it, and see what hapens from there.
Mabye the Mean City Cycle seat mod didn't do what I wanted, and I need to get a little further forward, lower or thinner in the thigh area. anyone got any ideas? |

I don't know what size you are? But a 800 to 1200cc bike is still plenty big enough to go anywhere and do anything. Riding them will sort of be like driving a mid size car. Shorter wheel base and lighter weight will make them feel more sporty vs our Nomads being like the old Caddie Sedan Devilles. Not fast or sporty and maybe not the best around town but really nice to ride most of the time! Which is really better depends on how you use the vehicle also.
On the other hand, if the issue is being vertically challenged, for a couple hundred bucks you can lower the thing a inch by swaping out the rear shocks. I if your stockers are good you could probably sell them and come out money ahead. A custom redesign off the seat to lower and narrow would probably cost $300-500 but that might be worth looking into? Lowering at the rear shock is something easy to check. Take all the air out of your stockers and drop your rear tire to 24-28lbs. Ride it around in stop and go city streets for a while but don't take off on a 1000 mile two up trip. That low speed riding will give you a bit of the feel of the back being lowered. Be a shame to take a several thousand dollar hit and go to a lessor (though good) bike when a few hundred dollars might solve the problem?

Thaks guys, I am 5'6" with 30" inseam.
Bob I do have chucksters 3" risers but wondering with the Phat IIs will I need to cange the cables? I was out or a 10 cold ride this morning & was realising I could stand to have the bars further back than what they are. I have read a lot about lowering the rear but seems to be most what I read says then the bike drags a lot. I can reach the ground (not great but before I was on the balls of my feet now I am about flat foot on the level) with the mod Mean Cty Cycles did to the seat it's just not real comfortable on longer rides, and in town it'd be nice if the seat was narrower so when I put my feet down it wasn't pushing my legs out. I came home today & thought - I am crazy for wanting to trade away this bike it's such a sweet ride - so I agree torsco, mabye I need to put a little more modding into this & see where it gets me. |

Good, nice ride. Real windy & fairly cold but was dry & a nice ride! That windshield is like a sail n the high winds so it kept me alert but all in all a nice ride. How was your trip to your Dad's place? Did you take the bike?

It was a good trip. didnt have the opp to take the bike cause the kiddies came with me. I plan to spend next weekend up there and come rain or shine, I'm taking the bike. He hasnt seen the mods I've made to it yet, and he really wants to check it out and take it for a ride.

At 5'6" and a 30" inseam... I had the exact same problem you did.
I used PhatII risers, which helped to bring the bars back, but the leg-reach problem remained. I never did cut the seat down on the sides to narrow-it; but many have said that helps alot. For me... I traded the Nomad last July for another bike before trying to cut the seat down. So, don't know how that would have worked out; but I am sure it would have helped a lot.

I instead bought a HD Ultra Classic. It has the lowering kit on it (both front and back -- lowers it nearly a couple inches); and it has the "reach-seat"; which sits lower; pushes you further forward; and has a very narrow "tongue" on it so my legs reach the ground easily. Overall the bike is now a well-balanced bike that I can flat-foot and feel much more confident. I catch a lot of grief on here about the HD though... ![]()
