New Louisiana Speeding Fines

Just in case you will be passing through Louisiana, read this:

Starting on Thursday 4/23/09

Hey everybody you might want to pass this info on to anybody that drives in
Louisiana. Wayne Torres one of our project managers was in Chalmette this
morning and got pulled over by a state trooper for going over the speed
limit in a school zone. The trooper told him starting tomorrow a speeding
ticket in a school zone even if it's one mile over the limit is going to be
$1,200.00. If you are going eleven or more miles over the limit you get the
$1,200.00 ticket plus a citation and possible jail time. It will be
considered a misdemeanor. Then you have to appear in court and pay court
costs. Also, starting tomorrow if you see a tooper on the interstate with
someone pulled over you have to switch to the left lane before you pass him
or you will get a $150.00 ticket. It's because so many of them are hit.

Be cautious, don't get burned.....

Thanks for the tip. They are getting some stupid laws here as well. If your caught 50 km over (30mph) its considered racing and you get the vehicle impounded and a $10.000 fine. even if there is nothing else around you. Fines here also for not moving over to the next lane when they are pulled over..

Man, I've heard of murderers getting less punishment than that. Our judicial system is screwed bigtime. Glad they're nailing the "real" criminals.

It's is a cash grab...the people setting those rates are less interested in safety and more interested in how much money they can extort from people through traffic fines that they know most people do not have the time to fight. They mask it as caring about another issue, but that is all it is, a mask. A lower fine combined with routine enforcement in school zones for example would be just as effective IMO. Don't even get me started on photo radar that we have here as far as a cash cow goes!

A similar law just went into effect in NJ. If you see any emergency vehicle (ambulance, tow trucks, etc) or police vehicle on the side of the road, you must move over at least one lane before passing that vehicle. I am not sure what the fine is if you fail to obey this new law.

Sorry guys, it was all over the state televised news today that the $1,200 fine is not true. The Louisiana State Police didn't say how much the fines are because they vary from Parish to Parish as they always have. I do know for a fact that in posted "work zones" the speeding fines are doubled. They let you know that very clearly with the signs along the work sites. The $1,200 fine was just one of those BS e-mails that some clown starts circulating just to get a rise. Next time I'll do my homework before posting a possible rumor.

We have the same law in AZ, you have to either move over or if that isn't possible, slow down for emergency vehicles along the side of the road.

The law that rubs me the wrong way is the "fines doubled for speeding" in construction zones. It could be 1:30 in the morning and you're going through a construction zone with no workers and you can still get nailed for double.

I thought the intent of the law was only when workers are present? Where I live, just about every road has construction on it somewhere.
