polishing out a windshield???

The windshield on my nomad looks like someone cleaned it with a papertowel or something mildly abrasive. It's hard to see during the day, but at night with headlights coming through it, it looks like spiderwebs all over.

Had anyone had any success polishing this sort of thing out of a windshield?

polishing out a windshield???

I ordered 3 bottles of polish from Skygeek.com. One bottle is a little more abrasive than the next and so on. The more abrasive cleaner is for deep scratches, the next is for mild scratches and the next is polish to use after the cleaners. I haven't tried the abrasive ones yet. I bought them to polish out the scratches between my big windscreen and the little sub screen. Never got around to it yet. I forget the name of the stuff and I'm at work now. I'll let you know tomorrow.

polishing out a windshield???

I got some Meguiar's Motorcycle polish at an auto parts store. Applied it with a soft cloth and polished with an electric buffer, using the soft cloth. I got a good bit of the scratches out, but not all. I also got some Janvil three part polish similar to what terrebone mentioned. I ordered over the net. It did not do as well as the Meguiar's.

Lemon pledge, the WalMart generic. Don't know about the scratches, but a great product to clean the windshield. Good bug remover, and great for a quick shine up on the entire bike while on the road.

polishing out a windshield???

in polishing the windshield for the purpose of removing scratches, you need to be aware that the surface has a coating on it that can be polished off.

I used some scratch remover, supplied to me by my chemist neighbor, and it did remove the finish. There is now a visible spot where the scratches were and is less tinted, for lack of a better description. I dont notice it while riding, even though it is within a few inches of the top.

I will see if I can get a picture of it.

here is a pic of the polish removing the film. BTW my windshield is pn 39154-0012, on an "07. I guess different ones may or may not have the coating.

polishing out a windshield???

used a 3 part headlight restoration wetsanding kit on some deep scratches on the edge of my wife's bike. Kit was from advance auto---bout $15. 3 grits of wet sanding plus a liquid polish. (1500,2000, 2500, polish). I also added a plastic polish between the last 2500 grit and the polish in the kit. It was scary how fast it came down. It was so cloudy I couln't see through it 1/2 way through. Had faith and it worked--I was sure it was ruined.. It came out 99% perfect. My neighbor saw the before & after and thought I had a new one. Specifically said no power buffers. It took about 3 hours to do a 2.5" strip down 1 edge.

Would I do a whole windshield----wow I think I'd save for a new one first.......if the scratches aren't that bad and are widespread.

good luck

polishing out a windshield???

I use this stuff:

http://www.blacklabcorp.com/all-kleer-motorcycle.htm

I've never inherited a used shield, so I have no firsthand experience on whether it will eliminate scratches. I used it on my Suzuki 1500 Classic shield for 5 years and it kept it in great shape. Now use it on my new Nomad's shield.

Be verrrry carefull! Here is a blurb about PC or Lexan windshields:

Most OEM windshields are polycarbonate, or "Lexan," windows, and there is no effective way to remove scratches. Polycarbonate is so soft that any attempt to remove material by abrasion will do more harm than good. There are hard coated varieties of polycarbonate that are less prone to scratches, but trying to repair a scratch on these applications will only remove the hard coating, and render the windshield unserviceable. To tell if your shield is made of Polycarbonate or Lexan, look for a stamp on the windshield that indicates “PC”, GE, for General Electric Lexan, or the words LEXAN or POLYCARBONATE.

Even the Novus information warns about PC coatings using the #2 and #3.

I wonder if earlier windshields were made with plexyglass, making them easier to remove scratches.

polishing out a windshield???

havent had my new motorcycle long enough to start seeing any swirling but on my mephis shade on my last bike i used a product called Gel-Gloss it is a great product it is a acrylic cleaner and will warn anyone using any kind of cleaner do not work it hard but a mild buff and just keep working it. The Gel-Gloss comes in a pink container (kinda like fiberglass resin can) and i use a fresh terry cloth applicator and it works great at polishing and even polished the deeper scrathes where it wasnt taking off surface but cleared them up to where they werent noticable!!
