Need some help....

Can someone help me out here? Thanks in advance for all replies.

I posted this in the garage, and then figured I'd get a quicker response by posting here. Please forgive any broken rules, won't do it again, but I've got the jitters.......

Here's the issue: My '07 with V & H setup, and Fi2000 has had the decel cackle since I had the dealer change the pipes last year. I've always thought that the settings of the Cobra unit (3, 5, 0) was the issue, and I just couldn't get it just right, so I messed around with it for a while, and just left it alone. Now is bugging me again, and I want it stopped.

Now, after reading a bunch of related info on the site, I believe I may have the dreaded exhaust leak, but tried to find it yesterday and couldn't. I ran smoke around every joint and connection in the pipes, and didn't notice anything peculiar. Called Cobra, and they advised me to plug up the exhaust in an attempt to see if the bike would stop running once plugged up. Used a towel in both ends, and nothing happened, bike kept running. Does this mean there is definitely a leak? And what else can I do to find it?

2nd issue: I just finished reading the threads and posts regarding spark plugs, and just so happened to have changed mine yesterday. Went to the dealer who looked up the stock plugs (DPR6EA-9), had them on the counter, but then noted a conflict in websites citing two different plugs. Tells me his parts fiche cited the DPR5EA-9 for the '07 Nomad, and sells me those instead.

Now, I am NOT a mechanic, and know nothing about engines, and took his word that the "5" plugs would work fine. Reading about the temperature differences in the engine now has me slightly concerned.

Should I worry about the "5" plugs causing any damage, or will all be good?

Again, thanks for any help you can provide, and my apologies for the long post.

Read this link from Gadgets. I'm guesssing you need to do this if it isn't already done.

Yeah, I remembered reading that on Gadget's site, and plugged up ("marbled") the breather hose on the right side last night. It's pouring rain here today and yesterday, so I didn't have a chance to take it out and see if the cure worked. It may have, in fact, and the issue is solved.

Of course, sitting here at work, looking at grey skies, and dreaming about my ride at home doesn't help.

Thanks.....

Marble the thing---that should fix any backfiring issues you may have. Don't think the plugs will be that big an issue.

I took the following information out of the owners manual on pages 118-119:

Standard Plug: NGK DPR6EA-9

Hotter plug: NGK DPR5EA-9

CAUTION
For cold weather and/or low speed riding, a hotter spark plug shown in the table may be used for quicker warms-ups and more efficient engine operation. However, for normal temperatures and/or high speed use, the standard spark plug must be used to prevent engine damage.

Unless the dealer has a convincing reason to use the hotter plug I would go with the standard plug.

Got it. Thanks.

Would you believe I was all in the manual, and never saw that caution statement......

I'm going to pull those plugs and save them for next winter, maybe. I'll just pick up another set of the 6EA's. It's $2.50 per plug, I'll survive.

Liz and I both run V & H baggers. You might want to double check the torque on the header exhaust cap nuts. They torque at 14 foot pounds. After I install the pipes I run them for a while and after they cool back down I retorque the nuts. Also the V & H header flange is not as thick as the OEM flange. If the dealer did not put an extra washer under the cap nuts when they installed them the cap nuts might have bottomed out on the studs and the pipes could not tight against the gaskets. I always install a washer under the cap nuts after I found this out the hard way trying to find an exhaust leak.

Thanks all....gonna check everything you said, especially the potential for missing washers at the headers.

Finally got to ride with the "marble" and noticed much less cackle on decel. Still a slight bit there, but nothing like it was.

Thanks again.......
