Cam chain extenders....
I know we've discussed this probably a million times....but, I'm getting close to 40,000 miles on my Nomad and even though I've had my cam chains checked out by my local dealer, I feel I'm getting close to needing cam chain extenders.
I've got alot of miles to put on my Nomad this year and I'd like to have some peace of mind that I'm not going to get stuck somewhere with holes in my tubes. To be honest, I don't trust myself to put extenders in right, so I was thinking about paying the dealer to do it. What does the brain trust think?

Cam chain extenders....
I've never done it but I've read the instructions and it looks pretty simple. Gadgets fix it page shows how and also how much of the post exposed below the caps that takes up the adjustment via spring pressure. If it hasn't sunk down below a certain point it's supposed to be fine. The chain flops around AFTER the spring loaded adjuster is on the end of its travel not before so if you have adjustment left then you don't need the extenders yet.
Check Gadget's site.. The site it will explain how to look for this.

Cam chain extenders....
Trip, some dealers may not install the extenders, being as they are not Kaw parts. You may have to find an independent. Jefe had it done to his Drifter at an independent shop. You might quiz him on cost.
Then there also some VROC'ers experienced with it that may be willing to assist you. |

Cam chain extenders....
Trip.
Re and Re of the extenders is a piece of cake. Really easy if you have a modified air intake and have removed the plastic cross over section. The extenders are a simple mechanical, ratcheting device that uses spring tension to keep the extender against the chain guide. Making sure you have removed all of the original gasket material is important, as well as not touching the starter, or rolling the bike in gear when you have any of the extenders out. I know this is a stupid sounding statement but it needs to be stressed. Now that Kawi makes the extenders you don't have to install the extra length buttons onto your originals, so real easy now. voyager

Only one problem, I think that they are only sold in Canada. There are a couple of people in the States that have manufactured a modification that you can buy from them to extend the extenders.

Cam chain extenders....
I haven't heard of anyone needing the extenders on a 1600. Might be not enough people have enough miles on them yet, but my 1500 needed them somewhere right after 22,000 miles. If you don't go wide open throttle much, you might not stretch them. Like voyager said, without the crossover pipe, it's not too hard of a job. Half a day best. Might need a big vise or press tho.

Cam chain extenders....
I installed the tensioner extenders on my 1600 Nomad at 30,000 miles and with 135k on it now the chains are still nowhere near touching the tubes. The part number for the extenders is 92027-1500-DE. Available from any Kaw dealer in Canada for about 7 bucks.

I bought my extenders at the dealer here also, I'll be installing them before to long. It doesn't look like that hard of a job at all. The front cylinder tensioner is a little harder to get at but still obtainable.

Cam chain extenders....
I did mine at 30,000 miles. It's a piece of cake Trip, go for it. Took me about an hour to do both. If you still have the crossover tube on the intake, the front jug is a bit of a wrestling act to get to the bolts, but it is do-able. The rear jug is too easy, probably take all of 5 minutes, less the time it takes for the red Loc-Tite to set.

Where did you guys get your parts? I'm in NY. Don't know any Canadian dealers.
I've got an '06 with 35,000 miles on the clock. Have not checked the extensioners yet. Steve |

I got mine from Snake (Tim Acree). Sadly, he passed away two years ago.
