The Big 200?
No, not 200 posts..........No, not 200 miles per hour.....But over 200 miles on a tank of gas. Actually 203 and when I filled up, it would ony hold 4.6 gallons, so I still had 7/10 of a gallon left. Warning light didn't come on til 190 miles. I wasn't trying to see what I could get, it's just that I live at least 10 miles from the nearest gas station and I wanted to make it to the Texaco to use my credit card. It was at 197 when I got there so I said "What the hell" , I'll drive another 3 miles up the road just to prove I can. So I'm thinking I could've gotten another 25 to 30 miles if I had to.....And I was also thinking of the speedometer error... I just got my gps yesterday and my mphs are 5 miles fast at 65 and 6 miles fast at 80, but the the gps said I was 1/10 over at 8 miles and 2/10 over at 20 miles, so the tripmeter's pretty darn close. And I wasn't babying her, either, and I also wasn't pushing her. Been riding all week in 20 to 30 mile winds mostly, mostly headwinds or crosswinds. Funny how it never seems to
hit me from the back. Not much fun when those crosswinds hit ya. Login or Register to Remove Ads |

I once reached 202 miles on a tank but the bike was running on fumes when I pulled in to a gas station, driving easy does stretch that gallon out. But thats something Im really not that good at most times.

I have got over 40 MGH so should take me to 200 but there have been reports about some of the 5.2 gals not being usable but then again, others say they have put in up to 5.2.
And another verification that the odometer is typically on a Nomad much closer than the speedo. No need to correct the MGHs for the error and any correction to the speedo will mess up the odometer and the mpgs. |

Interesting to know, Jamie. My light usually comes on at about 160 miles- I have went as far as 180. Always seems like I could have went further, but who want to walk to the gas station?
![]() I seem to be averaging consistently in the 40 MPG range- but I don't really do any hot-rodding or set any speed records, either. I haven't done the infamous Caddman modifciation or a different fuel processer yet, either, which most say reduces their MPG somewhat. I've noticed that unless I fill the tank really, really full, like well into the fill neck in the tank, the first bar of the gas gauge can go out in less than ten miles. Does yours do that? (Or anyone reading this that cares?) :) |

When I fill up I usally fill into the fill neck. Its 40 miles or so before my first bar goes off.

I fill it all the way into the neck also and usually my first bar disappears in the 50 to 55 mile range. Lot better than that first tank where I got in the high 20's, but who knows for sure if the dealer filled it up? 5 bars doesn't always mean full. Makes me feel good for those long trips, anyway.

If you fill it all the way into the neck you my get some dripping out of the over flow hose. it happened to me last year. I ran mine dry last year and still could not get 5.3 gals. in it filling all the way into the neck.

Congrats Jamie.....
For those that have a tach, if you keep your RPM's below 3,000 (running at 2,800rpm is about 70mph for me), you can raise your mpg substantially. Once you run above 3,000rpm for an extended period of time, you can watch the bars knock off fairly quickly. I have gotten 42mpg before which calculates to 222.6 miles on 5.3 gallons. But, I was running totally on interstate, no city driving, light load...light winds.

I guess my point on that last post is I only fill it in to the neck if I'm going to keep riding.

Actually, I always fill just above the neck by about 1/4 of an inch. Or, what I call, just above the stamped out holes in the neck. The trick is to not fill too much above the neck (like halfway up like I did on a trip one time. Had gas leaking out the side for about 10 miles).

jamie, just because you had that amount of gas left dont count on it be useable. A certain amount remains in the tank and you will flat run out and be stranded. Wouldnt advise stretching it too far.

Don't worry, Doc, that was probably just a one time experiment and I usually fill up before the warning light comes on. On long trip (my first will be Eureka Springs) I won't stay in the saddle that long, anyway. Probably stop, stretch and fill up every 100 to 120 miles or so. Thanks for the advice, though. And for the most part, Trip, my rpms were pretty low. That sucker feels likes she's idling at 70 in 5th gear. Does anyone keep a small canister or bottle of gas in their saddlebags just in case, maybe a quart? Just wondering. Don't plan to get that close again, but you never know.
