Windshield Fasteners

Does anyone know where I can find fasteners for the windshield for an 08 Nomad? I have a stripped hex head and I need to extact it. The dealers want to sell me a new kit so I can get the 32 Cent screws. I looked through a few hardware stores on a wing and a prayer to no avail. I tried to use the allen key that came with the bike rather than walking to my shed for the Craftsman set. Like they say, the longest route between two points is a shortcut!

My dealer ordered the screws I needed to fix the stripped ones, he never said anything about having to buy a kit. Check one of the on-line dealers and get part numbers and take him those or order them off line. If I remember rightly, there are two different lengths for the plexy glass section, not sure about the side brackets.

I think most of your part numbers can be found here:
http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche....e=13&A=49&B=64

By the way, the tools may have help cause the problem, but I have a good set of allens and they also stripped the heads out of several of my bolts. You are not alone.

Try again in a hardware store.
The local ACE hardware store carries them in all sizes both chrome and SS
Good hunting

You're not the first one to have problems with these. A couple of options here:

1. If you want the exact replacement hardware, order the replacements through one of the OEM parts houses like cheapcycleparts.com or bikebandit.com. Not cheap, though.

2. if you have an ACE hardware store in your area, they have an amazing selection of metric stainless steel and chrome fasteners. Chrome fasteners are expensive, stainless is a bit cheaper. They will not look the same, however.

Be aware that there are two different bolt lengths used. They use longer bolts (6x25mm) along the sides of the lower windscreen (the adjustable piece) as they do along the horizontal section (6x20mm). If you try to use the longer bolt where a shorter one is required, you run the risk of overtightening the bolt and will end up stripping or breaking it. Don't ask me how I know this.

I'd also use anti-seize compound on the threads to make sure you can get them apart in the future.

The threads are standard metric for 8mm (4 bolts holding the whole frame) and 6mm for the rest.

So if other than stock is acceptable you have chouces in chrome, and or stainless which will polish nicely.

I agree to add a dob of antiseize to the threads. This part of assebly is done at the dealers and i suspect air tools are used to install most, which causes things to be over tight, and or cross threaded.

The OEM parts are exceedingly soft.

In case black suits you, there is common steel in a black anodize as well.

If you know the thread size, Scootworks.com has fasteners.

I just discovered these screws are very common in France and Germany. I got 6 industrial ovens in for not the voltage for uses in the USA and these are loaded with ss cap screws just like the bike windshield.

Maybe if the 6mm and the 8mm screws were taken to a good hardware store they could order them.

The pitch on the 8mm is 1.25, and I can get the pitch on the 6's next time I go look at my tap set. Both are common and would be course thread just metric.

Antiseize the hell out of these and don't over tighten them. Stainless is fairly soft.

I've lowered and raised my windshield a dozen times and the top screws were acting like they wanted to strip. They were almost impossible to turn.. Believe it or not, good ole WD40 make 'em work like a charm now. Should have done that to begin with.
