What do you guys do for allergies?

So, what do you guys do for allergies (when riding)? I know I can't possibly be the only one who has hayfever in the spring. Mine lays me low, and every ride I take always winds up with me having a near anaphylactic attack, and then I almost OD on benadryl to get it to stop.

The two cold snaps we've had in January and February both brought in a lot of tree pollen with them, and I wound up having allergies way early, resulting in sinusitis that took me out of the loop for a couple of weeks.

Most meds don't help. I take Zyrtec in the morning, and supplement it with Benadryl, but it doesn't work 100% of the time.

Anyone?

Benadryl when I have no choice. Sure hate to do it during the day because it makes me really drowsy. I have found that Wal-finate out of Walgreens sometimes helps. It has 4 mg of Chlorpheniramine Maleate in it and doesn't put me to sleep. Mine isn't hay fever, it is an egg white allergy that gets to me every now and then. No easy answer, you might just have to buy the smallest package of each type and try it to find out what works. Benadryl is still the default standard. Wish you luck.

My nemesis is grass. For about 6 weeks in the late spring when the grass is seeding, my pharyngeal tonsils become raw. I make an annual trip to my doc who prescribes Nasacort and Singulair. I may ask for a Prednisone shot this year. If your symptoms are really bad, you should see an allergist. They can tailor your meds to your specific symptoms. Good luck!

Life-long dilema here. Lately, the best thiing I've come across is the Wallgreens equivalent of Claritan. Yellow and white tablet, has antihistamene and decongest. A little drousy, but very managable. Really seems to keep me dry and clear though.

Good luck with that. It's no joyride.

I suffer with the same problem in the fall BZ. My best recourse is going to my family doctor who injects me with a blend of steroids. If my memory serves me correctly, the blend is Decadron and Decadron long acting. Works great for 2 - 3 weeks. My doctor will only give me 2 injections per year because of possible minor side affects.

What do you guys do for allergies?

I was diagnosed with Vasemotor rininitis when I was 25 or so. Its a genetic disease. It is allergy symtims. I went to a specialist , was originally diagnosed with about 100 alergys..took syrum for about two yrs..went back..rediagnosed with this disease. No cure! It comes on when your around 25 and is suppose to go away when your around 55. I use allergy drops for my eyes, redness and drixoral for my nose. Nothing else works as well for me..and believe me, I've tryed them all. I've had the deviated septum operation done and my sinus cleansing done too..bottom line..live with it. I will be 55 this summer and for a birthday present..I'm hoping it goes away as they said it will....Bdog

I go to Costco and buy the store brand of Claritin (loratadine 10mg) - Kirkland Allerclear 300 tablets for $13 or so, 1 every 24 hours and non-drowsy.

I stay away from Benadryl when riding because I become a zombie on it.

Yeah, I can imagine that he does limit it, due to how it suppresses your immune system. My family doctor would do that for me, but that was years and years ago. I'm on an HMO now. :'(

I take a Claritan everyday and keep a ADVIL COLD AND SINUS in my pocket to relieve pressure if it gets out of hand. Never had a problem up until about 5 years ago.

What do you guys do for allergies?

kawbuc,

What really sets my allergies off is the fact that I live in the Brazos Valley in South Texas. I moved down here when I was right at 28, and have been here for about ten years now. I grew up severely allergic to tree pollen, but by the time I was 26 or 27 I felt like I had pretty much outgrown it. Then, about three or four years into being in the Brazos Valley it came back with a vengeance. This last winter for example, is the first winter on record here where I have had two or three serious fits, and I barely managed to stave off a sinus infection. I don't know if it's getting worse, but I hope not. But, I dang sure don't want to not be riding my Nomad anymore, especially since I just finished school!
