engine weight
I have a 1500 Nomad and unfortunately had to buy a new engine that sits at the seller across the country. I need to estimate the shipping weight somehow. The people I asked (mechanics etc) told me anything between 200 lbs and 450 lbs which makes it too far of a range in shipping rates. 200 lbs ship for 300 bucks while 450 lbs cost about 800 dollars. Soooo, please give me your best guess and I take the median of the results. ;)

I doubt it would weigh much over 200 if that. Why doesnt the guy weigh it with a bathroom scale?

Try e-mailing Kawasaki, they should be able to tell you. There must be an 800 number for customer service.

Maybe contact a local dealer. I'm sure they have probably received engines from the factory.

LOL The local dealer has no clue and since they know they are not the ones who will install the new engine, they really don't care.
But I had an epiphany and called a freight company. They knew. They have a computer program with weight specifications for all kinds of stuff. Then engine is between 300 and 330 lbs. Now just wish me luck that it arrives well and in once piece and works and I GET MY BIKE BACK BEFORE I TURN LOCO...well, maybe too late for the loco part LOL ![]() ![]() Login or Register to Remove Ads |

C O U G A R , I know you were having trouble shifting. What exactly was wrong that caused you to need a whole new engine?

That's a really good idea! I had no idea those engines weighed that much. I guess it is an engine and transmission though.

New engine? Don't here that here often, actually never that I recall. What happened after the shifting problem?

The mech said it would take 30 hours of work to take the transmission apart and find the problem and put it back together. he said, so much could go wrong; oil could leak and that he would have to take everything back apart again etc. He said, it is uncommon to fix a tranny. Instead, people buy a new one. He also said he doesn't have the time to take the transmission apart.
Now I stand there with an engine in NC and a seller who hasn't responded but took my money. I hope he is going to respond tomorrow so I can set up the shipping. Otherwise I'll have to report him and probably call the police. Well, I have no idea what the problem of the transmission is and neither does the mech since he convinced me to buy a new engine. He said it might be something stuck between the gears but to get to that, the tranny has to come apart. He said he will help me part out the old engine and sell it via Ebay. He said, it's more worth than the engine in one piece which is hard to believe. I do know that some of the covers need to be taken off the old engine and swap them out with teh other one. |

Hey Cougar;
You sure have had some bad luck with your Nomad. I have followed your story from the start and I am just concerned about the way this has all played out. What started out as an oil leak, then shifting problems after the repairs, to now a bad tranny forcing you to buy a new engine. My only opinion is do you really trust this mechanic. Does he have a good track record with other people's bikes. I'm sorry to hear that you have had more than your share of problems, and hope you get your bike repaired properly and enjoy it. Best of Luck !!! |

I wonder if one of our NC members might be close enough to this seller to maybe pay him a little visit, or otherwise make an inquiry on Cougar's behalf.

Ells, so sweet of you! I truly appreciate it.
Nomaddriver03...I can't shake off the feeling I bought a new engine so the mechanic wouldn't have to go through all the trouble to fix the transmission. I really don't think there was that much wrong with it. There are a few things he said that didn't match what he said afterwards such as that the engine I have is old (20000 miles) and that it is not worth fixing. Then he told that engines last up to 100000 miles. Then he told me that there are engines with 60000 miles on Ebay for 1500 bucks but he told me that my engine is worth more being parted out but only about 200 bucks. Well, except for the transmission, the engine got a lot of new components that are less than 5000 miles old. It sounds fishy. I really feel I do all that so the mechanic doesn't have to put in so much work. He said he is not going to put the old engine back together so I could sell it in one piece. It would cost him too much time, about 14 hours, plus a few hundred dollars in gaskets. He said nobody in a right mind buys an engine with a transmission problem. Thing is that the rest of the engine works great. I sure hope that the transmission is actually part of the engine I bought. I didn't see it on any othe pictures. Trust me, if the engine comes without the transmission, I am gonna sue the mechanic and he can pay for it. Funny thing though is that he really strikes me as a good and honest person. I really think he is honest. He will put the engine in for free and also help me part out the old one and sell it. He bought straps and shipped them to NC to have the engine secured on the pallet. He offered to arrange the shipping but that was too expensive what he came up with, so I arranged it myself. No big deal. He said he is going to buy all the gaskets that need to be switched out and will make sure the engine runs. It's not that he sits back and does nothing. He really thought I was the one who was trying to get a cheap tranny repair out of him while I thought he ruined my tranny. Anybody going to Frederiksburg in April? I hope my bike is up and running by then |

parting our your old engine will make you more money than just selling whole engine. Or keep it for back up parts. Good Luck.
