GPS ADVICE
Hey gang,
Happy new year!! Haven't been here for almost a month. Hope 2009 is a great year for us all. I received a Garmin Nuvi 765 unit for Xmas. I know it isn't the water tight unit many of you have for the bike but was wondering what you do to keep them water safe and good mounting ideas/info too. thanks Vin ??? I have the Nuvi 680 and just put it in the saddlebag when it starts to rain.
As far as a mount,Ram Mounts are the best I know of. I also wired in a power outlet and mounted it to a windshield screw next to the GPS. You are really going to enjoy GPS on your bike. |

Doc,, a quick way to waterproof is a Plastic sandwich bag... Now pretty but works,, Ram Mounts are some of the best out there...and they make a waterproof box for the GPS,,

GPS ADVICE
I have an additional question to ask on this subject if you all don't mind. I also just got a GPS that I am going to try on the Nomad soon with a RAM Mount and cig lighter outlet for power. My question is, is it better to mount the unit on the left or right handlebar (and outlet left or right side of windshield)or just personal preference? I have a Fire & Steel tach so it can't go in the middle. And also how long of an arm would be best on the RAM Mount? Your opinions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!!
Bruce

Mounted mine on the left side, after the first bar bend on the up slope, using RAM mount with 3" ext. Works great.

GPS ADVICE
Another tid-bit:
I have the Garmin 260w and bought the Ram mount. I decided to go with the clutch/brake reservoir mount here: http://products.ram-mount.com/rammou...r=RAM-B-309-1U If you go through the wizard on RAM's website, these are not compatible with our Nomads. The ball on the top is too close to the mirror arm and won't fit. I ended up cutting off the bottom piece of the above mounth and turning it right about 30 degrees to make it work. It has worked very well over the last few months. I have mine mounted on the left clutch. Great for when you're rolling along and need to find gas/food/lodging without having to lean forward. I went to Wal-Mart and picked up a Marine-grade 12v socket and wired it into the headlight bucket. The socket has a spring-loaded cap that keeps out moisture. I have it mounted next to the left riser with a couple of zip-ties. Good clean install. The arm and cradle were those spec'd for the GPS.
