Front cyc. pipe glows
I have Vance and Hines baggers on my 06 nomad. I was in the shop warming the bike up. The shop was not well light. The bike was running for just a few minutes( fan never came on) and I noticed a orange color reflecting on the side cover. Looking closer I can see the front cyc. pipe glowing for about six inches out of the head. The back didn't seem to glow. Had it not been at night I wouldn't have noticed it. I have run these pipes for about 3000 miles. Has anyone else ever noticed this. I'm not sure if this is something to be concerned about or if there all that way. Sure would like some feedback. Thanks

I'm confident one of the experts will jump in here but it sounds to me that you're running real lean and overly hot!
I would suggest a TFI fuel processor which will solve the lean problem and defiantly make it run cooler.

Running a lean mixture will make the pipes glow like that due to the extreme heat. I'd also recommend a fuel processor and maybe some intake mods to get more flow out the exhaust.

Its not uncommon for that to happen almost all my bikes do it you just dont notice it because it too light out. My four stroke dirkbike does it the first time i saw it i freaked me out i was in the garage with it running for about 10 seconds and the power went out the entire headpipe was glowing bright orange. my 06 nad does it too. and i have checked the plugs on it and its not lean.

I am sorry but glowing pipes is not normal.
It means if there is a cat it is clogged, and since with V&H pipes there is no cat, the mix is extremley lean. Probably this bike has no fuel mudual and if it does it isn't working. In addition the reed valves are probablely still in place and adding air right where you don't want it. A dull red to orange glow is way too hot. These pipes should not exceed 675 which is enough to turn the blue seen is day light cold. If this bike is under warrenty it should be looked at. If it doesn't have fuel modual it sure as hell needs one, and if it has one it should be checked out to make sure it is in order. I am a x foreign car tech, and a run a rivet forge to make knives. I know what heats do what and this is not normal.

I agree with mac, that bike is wayyyy to hot. My '05 never did that even when it was lean. I have added a TFI, V&H pipes and cadd man kit now so sure dont do it. Better get her checked out fast.

+2 with Mac. I would probably get that TFI on there quick. I have one and someone would have a hard time getting it from me.
I would get out my cheap Harbour Freight laser temp sensor and start comparing temps with that pipe. I would check the temps on both pipes, both heads, my friends Nomad pipes etc.. To do nothing, would not be an option for me. Especially since I did not see glow from both pipes. Kudos for noticing the glow. I do good to notice my gas gage. |

Thank you all for your responses. Great group. The color of the pipe was a dull orange so I'm guessing around 1700 degrees. I had read many other responces about pipes on this forum and many said they had added the pipes with out requireing a fuelpak and no one has mentioned glowing pipes. Looks like maybe I need to look into some kind of processer. In the 3000 miles with the pipes the bike never missed a beat started easy even on hot days and would average 47-48 mpg on the highway.

One thing I found out the hard way was that they will most definitely heat more sitting still "warming up" than riding down the road with the wind/air taking some of the heat off. I was running mine at a little higher rpm that idle and started to notice that my heat shield was trying to turn just a little...polished it out and have been fine since.

I would be willing to bet if you ad a fuel processor your pipes will do the same thing. If anyone wants to try it let your bike idle for 4-5 min in the garage then shut off all the lights I bet you would see a light orange to.

I agree. How about having some of you warm your bike up while stationary and in the dark and see if yours do the same thing.
