Need new horn NOW!!!

Yesterday on my way home, as I was pulling onto the slab. A lady in a jaguar without a blinker cut me off. Had she made the move 3 seconds sooner she would have driven in grass. I hit the brakes first, then the horn. Suddenly I noticed that I could barely hear it.

Instantly new I needed to replace the OEM for a louder one. I have read about the stebel air horn but I dont know that I am to the accessory wiring stage yet. What about the stebel magnum? They appear to be electric and should wire into the stock plugs?

Any opinions please...

The Stebel Nautilus air horn is electric and is easy to wire up. It will fit where your OEM horn fits and will get you noticed!

I'm not familiar with the Magnum. I would recommend the Nautilus but you do need to wire it up with a relay. There are several good threads here telling how to do it if you decide to go that way.

I replaced 2 stock horns, both under warranty. Then the darn thing went out again, this time the warranty had preceded it. So, I went to NAPA and got a car horn (128db), looks just like the stock horn but only in black. They come in a high and a low as most cars have two of them. I got the high. Then, to dress it up, I put some chrome strips on it that I have used a lot of on the 2006 NOMAD. You get the chrome strips at Auto Zone for $14.95 a 20' role.. The horn was $19.95 plus tax. The stock horn was $86.00... Oh, I had about 18' of the chrome left over for some decorating other areas of the bike. Just a fast and low cost option.

P.S. It will go onto the same mount, and uses the same two wires.

The Stebel is a great horn for the money. It does get you noticed.

Its louder than the horn on my dually pickup or wife's van. I think the horn on the train that passes by my place everyday is louder, but I am not sure. My Stebel cost $50 and fits nicely on the bike. Not sure the train horns would be worth the effort.

How was the Stebel Nautilus air horn to hook up electrically speaking? How was it for mounting? Does it fit where the orig. OEM horn is mounted?? I see it's $39.99 at Twisted Throttle.

Great horn. Used it the other day when a Expedition looking vehicle started to swerve into my lane. Not only did he abruptly pull back into his lane but a lady in a car next to me screamed.

I managed to install the Stebel, with relay, so about anyone should be able to. Just remember that it is designed to be held on by one and only one bolt. Of course the second one installs much easier. I suggest locktite and a locknut if you want to keep it.

In response to how does the NAPA horn sound, it sounds like the high note of a car horn. Not 1/2 the volume as the high sound of a car horn is 128db and the low tone of the car horn is 128db, I do not think you add the two (256db) because that in reality would be louder than a train horn, and they are not.

The Stebel horn was not hard to hook up. I ran a new black and red wire from the horn relay to the battery. (Of course I installed a fuse too) I fished the wires under the tank using a welding rod. Someday I will take the tank off and secure the wires. I used a wire cover just for looks to hide the wires from the front of the tank to the horn relay. I made a horn bracket out of scrap metal and painted it black. Hook up instructions come with the horn and can be found in Gadget or other places on the web. It was worth the effort and cost.

Stebel is the way to go. Simple install, even for a guy like me that is mechanically inept. Sounds very loud and will get you noticed.

I mounted my Stebel today, nice loud horn. I didn't like how it was mounting up because I have MC Enterprise highway bars and it started getting pretty crowded down there so I bought a piece of 1"X 1/8" aluminum stock from Home Depot, bent it at 1-1/2" X 1-1/2" X 1-1/4" in the shape of a Z and mounted the horn on it's side using the original frame mount location. I didn't add the extra elbow that comes with the unit because the inlet tube now faces the rear of the bike. I couldn't find any info that says you can't mount it sideways. While I was there, I also found my choke, still fastened up under the tank with a rubber band, guess the dealer was in a hurry on assembly and just forgot it. For a while, I didn't think fuel injection came with a choke. I've never needed it even on those 35 degree morning rides to work.

Took Ells advice and used locktight everywhere. Very solid and tucked in between the engine and frame very nicely. Relay fit up under the tank right below the speedo. I was out in the garage when I tested it and freaked my wife out, she didn't know what it was.
