What happens when an elderly motorist pulls out in front of a motorcycle:

Posted from another site, not sure of source:

So there was a poker run on Sat. Not sure of the name but this guy was the tail end of the poker run. So some approx 80 year old lady decides to turn out in front of this guy even though she had seen the rest of the group pass in front of her. Crash.

So as you might guess the guy was not wearing a helmet, many Harley riding poker run type of people don't. Fortunately he did not have any head injuries but he did break his femur, pelvis, and leg. He was conscious when he left the accident and was operated on in emergency room and is now recovering.

Moral of the story, just because you are in a group, does not mean you are safe practice 2 second rule and still assume drivers do not see you or anyone in the group. Even if you wear a helmet, multiple large broken bones are not fun and the clots that can develop from them can kill you as they did a friend who raced motocross, broke his femur, 3 weeks later a blood clot let loose and killed him. These pictures were taken by a rider where I work while he was working in his front yard.

Good reminder. It is easy in a group to be a little more complacent about what is happening outside of the group, and focus more on what the group is doing.

The safety in numbers thing has its exceptions.

Looks like that happened in Audiogooroo country. Glad the guy is alright. Suppose the lady got tired of waiting?

Don't want to make lite of the situation but the bottom of that bike sure is clean

I think he was lucky to have just broken a bone or two. That could have been much worse.

That's a CSPD cruiser alright, but I didn't hear anything about the accident here. It's not on the local news websites at all.

The police drive Chargers in the Springs, eh? They do here, too. They have those nice hemi's in 'em. Hard to outrun.

The sheriff department here has 3 Magnums that look just like mine but they only have the high output v6. I want to ask them to run with my Hemi once to see how tuned up they are.

Wow, his guardian angel was with him there.

Mmmh, I have never felt safe riding in a group. Probably cause I hear of many incidents that happened during group rides. In a group, it's even more hazardous and one has to be extra careful of not only the surrounding drivers but also the group riders. I was riding with some wild hombres from Boise, Idaho once (and never again). They broke all speed limits, and the group leader was swerving around the group like a hornet, zooming into the formation (oh well, I just remember: what formation? LOL There was barely any formation there). They passed me and left me in the dust since I didn't wanna play their game. That is probably why I don't ride in groups anymore.
On the way back to Idaho from Phoenix one of the riders came too hot into an interstate exit and crashed into a sign. Totalled her bike and was sitting in a wheel chair for quite a while.
I am not badmouthing, just stating facts.

"So as you might guess the guy was not wearing a helmet,"

But the most important question. Did he look cool?

Maybe he was trying to catch the group? Could it be possible, just possible, he was going rather fast and the poor old lady didn't have a chance? Just saying. I find it hard to believe she sat through the whole formation and pulled in front of the last one.
