1600 nomad trunk questions
I see alot of Nomad's with trunks on them. were is a good place to start looking for a trunk and what access. do I need to go with it.( mounting hardware ect) I would like one with the back rest installed and the arm rest. and do they come just in one color or do I have to have it painted to match the bike or can you order them already painted?

1600 nomad trunk questions
It all depends on how much you want to spend. There are a number of options for trunks. There are no Nomad-specific trunks, many trunks come in black or are primed for painting. So, unless you've got the skills, you will have to factor the cost of painting your trunk.
At a minimum, you are looking at A rack to mount the trunk on, you don't want to use a luggage rack because they aren't rated to carry more than a few pounds. If you are handy, you can build one, but a Wompus rack is considered to be the best available. A trunk, this can be a used trunk from a Yamaha Venture, a Scootworks SuperTrunkII, or an inexpensive Mutazu trunk. Just Google "Harley trunk" and see what pops up. Lots of options. Having a black bike helps, as most new trunks offer a black gelcoat or paint option as standard. You'll either have to paint your trunk yourself, or have it professionally painted. You might find a used trunk with the backrest you're looking for, but with most new trunks, it's an additional expense. I did my trunk for about $350, and that's an affordable Mutazu trunk mounted on a Wompus rack. I didn't require paint, and I have added a few bucks worth of LED running lights and some Kawasaki and Vulcan badging. Here's a picture to show you what I did. ![]() You can see part of the Wompus rack in this photo: ![]() A lot of us have trunks, so you've come to the right place.

Nogiggy,
Go with the wompus rack. It is built tough and if it breaks the bike is going with it. I went with the harley tourpac. Size and it is a tougher material than many of the inexpensive ones (don't want the wife to fly off backwards - Big trouble). Mine did require a paint job but the local guy did it fairly cheap. Total was less than $850. Money well spent when traveling with the size for storage and the rack on top.

I wouldn't be without my trunk now. Its one of the handiest accessories on the bike. I also like the Harley Tour pak because of its size and solid construction. Again, mounted on a Wompus rack its a bullet proof combination.

There are so many options for trunks, it is impossible to say any one trunk or mounting option that would be best for you. Check out Gadget's trunk site to start:
http://www.gadgetjq.com/trunks.htm There are some pics of many options, and links to places for trunks and mounting solutions. Now, if you aren't afraid to put a little elbow grease into trunk restoration, head over to ebay and pick up a used trunk for a deal. I just picked up a trunk from an 87 Goldwing Aspencade and will be refurbishing it over the next month or so. Wompus racks are definately the way to go for mounting any trunk if you want something solid and reliable. If you are really handy at metal work and welding, here's a link to KPMH's Harley Toutpak restoration with custom mount plans and instructions. |

And like all the others said, it depends on what you want, and how much you want to spend. I think the Yamaha Venture trunks match the lines of our Nads better, but I like the functionality (and available accessories) of the Harley tour paks. I really wanted a set of speakers on the trunk, and so Harley was the way I went in the end, and I did use the "wompus rack"I did repaint it myself, and counting the trunk (e-bay), backrest (local Harley shop), speakers (crutchfield) and speaker pods (Dragonfly concepts), and my '57 Chevy NOMAD tailgate emblem (e-bay), I have about $650 tied up in it. Don't think I could get along without it now, and the wife really loves it too ![]()

Dennis (TheMadNomad) I like your solo rack for the Nads, I think I'll try to make a set of them, and a long set to replace my wompus rack, and have the mounting plate to where it stays mounted to the tour pack. Then to switch from solo to 2-up, remove the trunk, replace the brackets, then remount the trunk, and vice-versa.
BTW, your set-up looks really good! ![]()

Where did you find the trunk?
Yes, those measurements will make for a nice sized trunk.
