Horrible squeaky noise

On our ride Sunday, my bike developed this horrible squeaky noise. It came and went, depending on speed, load, RPM, and road surface, and it was a terrible high-pitched thing. Very annoying.

After banging around looking for loose tin and radiator grilles and heat shields, I finally pressed down hard on the speedometer, and the noise changed. I pressed in hard with my knees on the tank and moved the tank slightly, and it vanished. I let go of the tank and it came back.

So, it appears that I've developed the "dirty tank mount rubbers" squeak, and I'll need to lift the tank, clean off the dirt, and maybe give those rubbers a good coat of rubber lube or silicone. (Depending on the exact type of rubber involved, silicone may or may not be a good choice for this job. I don't know, so I'll probably do a little test patch and look at it later. In the mean time I'll probably just use rubber lube.)

CQ, pre-lubricated rubbers are a lot easier to deal with.

That's right, CQ. Use the proper nomenclature to avoid ambiguity.

Hey thanks cadd, I've developed a squeeling vibrating sound depending on speed and RPM. I haven't been able to find it yet, but I bet 100 bucks thats what it is.....I'll check it out next time I'm riding. Seems to creep up on de-acceleration at the lower rpms.

Yeah, Wolf, that's just how mine was acting. Only at the mid-low to mid RPM, and worse when you decelerate from around 35 mph.

Only on KawaNOW could a thread go from squealing gas tank to condoms to sexually transmitted disease back to squealing gas tank.

Horrible squeaky noise

I developed the same squealing sound last Friday night. I rode it Saturday just to see if the squeal was still there and it wasn't. Guess I can hold off lubing my rubbers for now. You're right though, it is an unpleasant sound. At least w/this thread I'll know what to do if it returns.

Does bring up a question though. I had Patty with me Friday night but not on Saturday???? naw, couldn't be.
