Is there anyone, besides me, :-/ that hasnt debaffled their stock pipes ? If so, why.

I may just buy a set of Vance and Hines, if I do my dealer said I could get by with just putting them on and doing nothing else to bike. Is this correct.?

Well I'll tell you, as a new debaffled owner for less than an hour, I wish I had done it back in 06. It cost me (Lowes) $12.88 for 1-3/4 one piece hole saw, $3.54 for 1-1/8 wood dowel, $6.49 for can cutting oil. for the grand total of $22.91

The bike now has that wanted rumble without the loudness for 20 minutes worth of work. If you want to spend $400+ for new pipes, it's your money.

Hey reloader, did the one hole saw blade cut both sides ok or did you need a second blade?

I just walked in from the garage from having completed a bafflectomy on my bike. I used a 1 3/4" hole saw for metal (paid a little extra for the best they had); used a 1 1/4" x 2" long dowl rod lightly trimmed to narrow it to fit tight inside the pipe -- leaving half of it alone so it didn't go into the pipe. Used WD 40 no more than 4 times while drilling each side. Used a big; powerful, two-handle drill. Spent less than 8 minutes cutting for each side. Used only the one blade. Twisted the baffle several times as I pulled it out -- was snug at first then it let loose. Both came out without any complications to speak of.

Bafflectomy done!! Sound is much better. "Throatier"; as everyone says. Not overly loud though. Not HV pipes either though. I ride an '04 1500FI just for the record.

I used a Rigid brand 1 3/4" metal hole saw with cutting oil. It cut both and could do several more. Paid about $17 total for the saw and arbor. Used a Dewalt 18v cordless 1/2" drill and made both cuts easily on one battery.

My problem is I have a crappy drill and have not decided if the sound is worth the purchase of the saw, cutting oil, dowel AND a new electric drill. Someone in the household might expect me to do more with the new drill beyond removing two baffles.

Could be worse. I fried my "El Cheapo" ($25) Harbor Freight 1/2" drill halfway through the first muffler and had no choice but to drop everything and make a desperation run to Home Depot. Bought a nice new B&D and was finished with both mufflers 5 minutes after I got back home.

Just one cutter "Lenox " brand. It cut the weld like wood.

The dowel was 4' in length so I just cut off a 10" section. It fit just right in the pipe so only a few wraps of tape were required to keep it from it going deeper. Did use same dowel both pipes.

First baffle (right side) required a bit of pulling and twisting but then easily came out. The left one pushed inside when weld was cut, and pretty much flopped around inside but wouldn't come out. Took a close look and there was still a slight ridge inside. One more hit with the drill, and it came out without any problem.

I think having a heavy-duty drill and a quality hole-saw was the "key" to making this job a piece of cake for me. If you don't own a heavy-duty drill... rent one rather than buy one.

I also used the same dowel for both pipes... and also had to "hit" the hole one more time to clear-out a burr or two before the baffles came out completely.

I bought custom pipes, because I didn't want to cut mine. I was afraid some cop would give me a ticket and I'd need to round up a set of pipes before I could take care of it, and the dang things aren't cheap to ship, even if you can find an unaltered set for the right year, cheap enough. It was peace of mind to have the stockers available at a moment's notice.

You can, but the bike won't run nearly as well as if you drop $20 more cash on a Spectre air filter an a buck for a resistor. A TFI is an even better idea but it costs a couple hundred. I've bought good used ones for $100 though.

I bought a heavy-duty drill and bit from Home Depot. Ruined the bit w/one silencer - took it back and explained the deal. HD replaced the bit. Got back, finished the job - boxed up the new drill and took it back for a refund. I'd like to have a nice drill like that some day :)

I haven't. I have no need to. The bike's loud enough for me. I'm getting 42mpg. Don't need now power.
